Description of Norpramin

Norpramin is a tricyclic antidepressant with the generic name desipramine. This particular medication corrects the balance of certain chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced due to depression. You can buy Norpramin in the form of film coated tablets in several different dosage strengths, including Norpramin 10mg, Norpramin 25mg, Norpramin 50mg, Norpramin 75mg, Norpramin 100mg and Norpramin 150mg. All tablets contain the following inactive ingredients- corn starch, calcium carbonate, acacia, mannitol, magnesium stearate, iron oxide, titanium dioxide and hydrogenated soy oil.

Indications & Dosage of Norpramin

Norpramin is specifically prescribed for treating depression, but your doctor may recommend it for other medical purposes as well. You must take Norpramin exactly as your doctor prescribed it, but your doctor may change your dosage from time to time to help you achieve the maximum benefits during treatment. You may be prescribed a low dose to begin with.

In most cases, adult patients would be given a daily dose in the range of 100mg to 200mg. If the patient is suffering from a more severe case of depression, then the doctor may increase the dosage slowly to 300mg. In any case, a daily dosage of Norpramin greater than 300mg is not recommended and usually not prescribed. In fact, a patient who requires as much as 300mg per day may have to be observed in a hospital, where doctors would regularly visit the patient and there would be access to skilled nursing care and ECG machines for regular testing.

Norpramin may take time to positively affect the condition. You must continue taking the drug as your doctor prescribed it and for the complete duration, even though you do not see any immediate improvements. You must not stop taking Norpramin abruptly without consulting your doctor, as it may lead to adverse withdrawal symptoms. Your doctor may recommend a slow and steady reduction in dosage, leading to a final stoppage of treatment.
