Description of Actemra

Actemra is a man-made protein that inhibits the activity of a naturally-occurring chemical, interleukin-6, that promotes inflammation. The generic name of this drug is Tocilizumab. This drug is administered through an intravenous injection.

Indications & Dosage of Actemra

Actemra is indicated for adult patients with mild to serious rheumatoid arthritis. This drug is also used, often in combination with other arthritis drugs, to treat Still’s disease (juvenile idiopathic arthritis) in pediatric patients above 2 years of age.

The recommended dosage range for adult patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis is Actemra 4mg/kg – Actemra 8mg/kg, administered intravenously for one hour once in seven days for four weeks.

Pediatric patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis are administered Actemra intravenously for one hour once every 14 days. The exact dosage is calculated on the basis of the patient’s body weight. The recommended dosage for children weighing less than 30kg is Actemra 12mg/kg. Children weighing 30kg or more are administered a dosage of Actemra 8mg/kg.

Side Effects & Interactions of Actemra

Consult your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following serious side effects during treatment:

  • Loss of appetite, dark-colored urine, stomach pain, black or tarry stools, yellow eyes or skin
  • Severe stomach ache with constipation
  • Easy bruising or unusual or easy bleeding
  • Severe chest pain

In some cases, patients may experience an allergic reaction after taking Actemra. Stop your medication and contact your doctor if you experience shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, hives, trouble swallowing, facial flushness, or severe skin rashes after taking a dose of this drug.
