Description of Advair Diskus

Advair Diskus is a drug used in the treatment and the prevention of asthma attacks and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD. It has two active ingredients present in it- fluticasone (steroid) and salmeterol (bronchodilator). Fluticasone helps prevent the release of inflammation causing substances in the body, while salmeterol soothes the airways to improve breathing. The generic name of Advair Diskus is fluticasone and salmeterol.

Indications & Dosage of Advair Diskus

Advair Diskus is indicated for treating asthma attacks and also to prevent chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It can be indicated for other uses as well.

Advair Diskus is available in three different strengths- Advair Diskus 100/50mg, Advair Diskus 250/50mg and Advair Diskus 500/50mg. The strength is stated as fluticasone/salmeterol.

Advair Diskus should be administered keeping the doctor’s prescription in mind. Excessive use of the drug may be fatal, since an overdose of salmeterol can result in asthma related death. The drug should not be used to treat an already triggered asthma attack. This will only complicate the problem. Dosage patterns should not be abruptly changed without proper consultation with a doctor. If the drug does not seem to be doing its job, it may be a sign of an impending asthma attack of a serious nature. In such a case, a doctor must be immediately consulted. Finally, Advair Diskus should be stored away from heat and moisture and at room temperature.

Side effects & Interactions of Advair Diskus

There are several side effects one may experience after using Advair Diskus. One should buy Advair Diskus only if he/she is aware of the various side effects. Some side effects are less dangerous and wear off in time. Some of these side effects are as follows:

• Sinus pain, stuffy or runny nose, sore throat;
• Diarrhea;
• Nausea and vomiting;
• Hoarseness of the voice;

Drug interactions are possible if Advair Diskus is used along with substances like diuretics, amiodarone, HIV medications like ritonavir, antidepressants like desipramine, beta-blockers, antifungal medications, antibiotics, and MAO inhibitors. A visit to the doctor is necessary to determine the safety of using Advair Diskus with other substances, including prescription and/or non-prescription drugs.
