Description of Advantage Multi

Advantage Multi is a flea control medicine for dogs and cats. Pet owners buy Advantage Multi to protect their pets from heartworm. The drug also eliminates parasites in the intestines. It is available in the form of a tube applicator. It contains Imidacloprid with moxidectin. Imidacloprid is in the class of neonicotinoids.

Indications & Dosage of Advantage Multi

Advantage is a topical solution for eliminating fleas from cats and dogs. Pet owners buy Advantage Multi to safeguard their pets from fleas and intestinal parasites. The drug is also good for preventing heartworm. Imidacloprid in the drug is a neurotoxin. It attacks the nervous system of the fleas. This paralyses and eventually kills them. The moxidectin in Advantage Multi attacks the larvae of the heartworm. It also kills hook worms, whipworms and roundworms.

Advantage Multi has to be administered once a month to give all year round protection. Pet owners who buy Advantage Multi find its special applicator tube very handy. It is preferable to administer the medicine on the same date of each month. It should be applied as one dose on dogs who weigh less than 20 lbs. The application should be between the shoulder blades and on the skin after parting the hair.

If the pet is over 20 lbs, Advantage should be applied on 3 or 4 places on the back directly on the skin after parting the hair. The idea is to prevent the pet from licking the medicine. The drug becomes safe once it dries. The drying time is about 30 minutes. In the case of cats, the applicator should be used over the skin at the base of the cat’s head at the back. Advantage comes in different packs for dogs and cats. It is also packed according to the weight range of pets.

Advantage is very effective against fleas. Pet owners see the dead fleas for as long as six weeks after the first application on their cats and dogs. The medicine also works efficiently against heartworms.

Side Effects & Interactions of Advantage Multi

Advantage has an odor that some pet owners may find disturbing. It also may lead to the pet scratching the skin where the medicine was applied. Any strange behavior like sleepiness or drooling should be reported to the veterinarian. Any untoward signs like trembling or abnormally dilated pupils should be reported to the veterinarian.

The veterinarian should be informed about the other drug that the pet is being given. These can include vitamins and other drugs used for the prevention of ticks or fleas.

Warnings & Precautions of Advantage Multi

it is prudent to discuss the health of the pet with the veterinarian before starting any drug. Testing should be done to see if Advantage can be given to the pet. After the application of the drug, it is imperative that the pet owner prevent the dog or cat from licking the affected region. If the dog is a Collie or any other herding breed, then there is a possibility of a reaction if it licks the drug. Trembling and dilated pupils should immediately be reported to the veterinarian if they surface.
