Description of Amerge

Amerge is a drug widely prescribed to treat severe headaches caused by migraine. Other symptoms of migraine including nausea and increased sensitivity to sound (phonophobia) and light (photophobia) are also remedied by Amerge. The primary component in this oral drug is naratriptan hydrochloride, which is broken down to the active drug called naratriptan. It is a member of the class of drugs known as triptans, which act as serotonin agonists. The mechanism of action involves constriction of blood vessels and inhibition of certain inflammation inducing agents in the body.

Patients who buy Amerge can do so in 2 strengths: 1mg and 2.5 mg Naratriptan (the generic name for Amerge) tablets. Some of the inactive components present in this medicine are: croscarmellose sodium, magnesium stearate, hypromellose, microcrystalline cellulose, lactose, titanium dioxide and triacetin.

Indications & Dosage of Amerge

Before patients buy Amerge, they should be aware that this drug cannot be used to cure migraine. Amerge can merely relieve the symptoms when taken in proper doses at the onset of a migraine attack. Headache caused due to other health disorders cannot be treated using this drug.

The recommended dosage for adults (the safety of Amerge for pediatric use has not yet been established) is one 1 mg or 2.5 mg or as advised by the doctor. The dosage should never exceed 5mg in 24 hours. In the case of patients with liver or kidney disorders, the maximum dose should not cross 2.5 mg.

Amerge should not be taken within 4 hours of taking similar drugs to treat a headache. Swallowing the tablet whole with a glass of water is the best way to ingest it. Amerge has to be stored away from light and moisture.
