Description of Atacand
Atacand is used to treat high blood pressure in the pediatric group (children aged between one and seventeen). In adults, Atacand is used as a medication for heart failure, hypertension and renal problems (caused by insulin independent diabetes).
The oral drug contains the active ingredient Candesartan in four different strengths- 4mg, 8 mg, 16 mg and 32 mg. The different tablets vary in color, the lowest strength 4mg tablet being off-white, the 8 mg tablet being light pink, and the higher strength tablets being a darker pink. The generic name of Atacand is Candesartan Cilexetil or Candesartan.
Candesartan belongs to a class of medicines known as angiotensin II receptor antagonists that work by blocking the renin-angiotensin system to prevent the blood vessels from constricting, which results in enhanced blood flow.
Indications & Dosage of Atacand
When used to treat hypertension in adults, the dosage of Atacand can vary according to individual requirements as assessed by the doctor. Under usual circumstances, the dosage varies between a daily total of 8 mg and 32 mg. For the pediatric group, doses vary according to age and weight. Children between the ages of 1 and 6 years can be administered 0.20mg/kg Atacand as an oral suspension. While administering Atacand to children in the age group ranging from 6 to 17 years, 2mg- 16mg is the recommended daily total (divided in equal doses) for those who weigh below 50 kg, and 4mg-32 mg is recommended for those weighing above 50 kgs.
Adult patients who buy Atacand as a medication for heart failure can start by taking 4mg Atacand tablets once daily and double the dose once every of two weeks until the prescribed dosage of 32mg daily is achieved.
Atacand may be taken with or without food. Storage must be maintained at normal room temperature (around 25 degrees Celsius) away from moisture.
