Description of Cytovene

Cytovene is a synthetic guanine derivate which is specifically active against cytomegalovirus. It belongs to the category of antiviral medicines, and it has Ganciclovir as its main ingredient. It is given to the patient in the form of an intravenous injection. Cytomegalovirus may lead to symptomatic CMV disease which may affect different organs in the body, leading to fever, hepatitis, pneumonia, myelitis, encephalitis, colitis, neuropathy, retinitis or uveitis.

Indications & Dosage of Cytovene

Cytovene is used for treating and preventing infections caused due to cytomegalovirus. It works by slowing the growth and spread of the virus, so that the infection can be treated. Usually, your doctor will advise you to buy Cytovene if you have a suppressed immune system, probably due to AIDS or an organ transplant.

Initially, you will be given Cytovene 5mg per kg over a period of one hour. You will receive the shot every 12 hours for 2 to 3 weeks. As a maintenance dose, you will receive Cytovene 5mg per kg once daily 7 days a week, or Cytovene 6mg per kg once daily 5 days a week.

Side Effects & Interactions of Cytovene

Diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, decreased appetite, increased sweating, infertility, decreased sperm production or itching are commonly experienced side effects of Cytovene. Although these are mild side effects of the drug, you should inform your doctor immediately if any of these persist or worsen. Also seek medical attention if you develop any serious side effects of Cytovene. Such side effects include:

  • Unusual bruising or bleeding
  • Signs of anemia, such as fatigue or paleness
  • Fever or signs of a new infection
  • Tingling or numbness in certain parts of the body

Cytovene may also lead to decreased levels of red blood cells, platelets and white blood cells in the body. For this, your doctor will need to take regular blood tests. Therefore, do not miss any scheduled appointments with your doctor.

Some hypersensitive patients may develop symptoms of an allergy, which include hives, severe dizziness, difficulty breathing or facial swelling. Cytovene should be stopped if you experience any of these symptoms. Seek medical attention if needed.

Some of the drugs that may interact with Cytovene include didanosine, mycophenolate, imipenem, cilastatin and probenecid. Also inform your doctor if you are taking any medicines that decrease bone marrow function or lower blood cell count, including zidovudine, trimethoprim, and sulfamethoxazole and cancer chemotherapy drugs. Also do not take cyclosporine during Cytovene treatment, as it may cause kidney problems.

Warnings & Precautions of Cytovene

You should not buy Cytovene if you have an allergy to Ganciclovir or valganciclovir, as both of these are similar drugs. Also inform your doctor beforehand if you have a low red or white blood cell count, low platelet count, kidney problem, or if you are undergoing radiation treatment.

Kidney function declines as you age. As Cytovene is removed through the kidneys, geriatric patients have more risks of developing serious side effects of the drug.

As the drug makes you dizzy, do not perform tasks such as driving a vehicle or operating a machine during Cytovene treatment. Doing so may lead to a serious accident.
