Description of Depakote ER

Depakote ER is used to treat Bipolar Affective Disorder or maniac depression. Its generic name is Divalproex Sodium. Depakote ER is a mood stabilizer and belongs to a class of Anticonvulsants.

The communication of brain and nerves is kept balanced by a hormone in the brain called GABA that acts as a natural calming agent. When GABA reduces, it over-stimulates the brain. Depakote ER enables increased supply of GABA to the brain to calm the nerve cells for a longer period of time. Thus, it stabilizes the electrical nerve activity in the brain and calms the period of mania. The available strengths are: Depakote ER 250 mg and Depakote ER 500mg.It is administered in the form of oral tablets.

Indications & Dosage of Depakote ER

The recommended dosage for mania is 25mg/kg/day given once daily. The dose should be increased rapidly to reach the dose which yields the desired clinical effect. The maximum recommended dosage is 60mg/kg/day.

The recommended dose for migraine is 500mg/day once daily for 1 week, increased to a maximum of 1000mg/day.

Due to somnolence in the elderly, their dosage should be lighter in the beginning, preferably 250mg/day. It should be increased slowly by increasing the intake of fluids and nutritional food. Store the tablets at 25 degrees Celsius.
