Description of Elestat

Elestat comes under a category of drugs referred as antihistamines. The generic name of this drug is Epinastine Ophthalmic. It is meant for ophthalmic use only. Elestat is available in form of sterile ophthalmic solution. This strength of the ophthalmic solution is Elestat 0.5 mg/ml or Elestat 0.05%.

The nonmedical ingredients present in this drug are: monobasic, detate disodium, sodium chloride, purified water, sodium phosphate, and hydrochloric acid and/or sodium hydroxide (for pH adjustment). The preservative used in this drug is benzalkonium chloride.

Indications &, Dosage of Elestat

Elestat is used for preventing allergic conjunctivitis, or itchy eyes due to an allergic reaction of the eye. It works by blocking the activity of histamine, a naturally occurring chemical that to a certain degree causes the symptoms of allergic or hypersensitivity reactions, such as itching.

The dosage for all patients is the same, irrespective of the severity of the symptoms of the allergic reaction. To prevent allergic conjunctivitis, apply 1 drop in each eye two times daily. For effective treatment, you should follow the below-mentioned guidelines:

  • Use Elestat every day, even on days when you do not experience any symptoms, until the allergy season is over or exposure to the allergen that causes itchy eyes is terminated
  • Ensure that the tip of the dropper does not touches any surface. The dropper through which the eye solution is administered is sterile, and it will become contaminated if it comes in contact with any surface. A contaminated dropper may worsen the symptoms or cause a new eye infection
  • Patients who wear contact lenses should remove them before administering the drug. Wait for some time, at the least, 15 minutes, before putting back the contact lenses
  • Do not use the drug in more quantity than recommended as it may lead to serious side effects

Side Effects &, Interactions of Elestat

Most patients who use Elestat tolerate the drug well. The most common side effects of this drug are redness, itching, or burning of the eye. These side effects are mostly mild in nature. Consult your healthcare provider if any of these side effects are severe.

Elestat may interact with other drugs. If you are using any other medications, including the ones that are available over the counter, tell your doctor about it.

Warnings &, Precautions of Elestat
