Description of Elmiron

Elmiron has Pentosan Polysulfate Sodium as its active ingredient, and it belongs to the therapeutic class of anticoagulants or blood thinners. You can buy Elmiron in the form of white opaque hard gelatin capsules available in 100mg strength. Each capsule also contains microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, pharmaceutical glaze, synthetic black iron oxide, Aluminum Lake, propylene glycol, titanium dioxide and n-butyl alcohol.

Indications & Dosage of Elmiron

Elmiron is used for treating pain or discomfort caused due to a bladder disorder such as interstitial cystitis. The medicine works by building a layer on the patient’s bladder walls, so that it stays protected against harmful or irritating substances in the urine. Being a blood thinner, it also prevents the formation of blood clots.

Usually, you will be advised to take Elmiron 300mg per day, divided into three Elmiron 100mg capsules to be taken three times per day. Take the capsules with water, at least 2 hours after or 1 hour before food. The treatment usually ends after 3 months. If the desired effects are not achieved, your doctor may advise you to take Elmiron capsules for next 3 months too.

Side Effects & Interactions of Elmiron

Elmiron may commonly lead to the following symptoms in a majority of patients:

  • Mild dizziness
  • Headache
  • Stomach pain, diarrhea, nausea
  • Depression
  • Mild skin rash or itching

These are temporary side effects of the drug and subside on their own as your body becomes tolerant to it. However, inform your doctor at once if any of these symptoms worsen or persist. Also seek medical attention immediately if you develop any serious side effects of Elmiron. Symptoms of such side effects include:

  • Blood in the stools or urine
  • Nosebleeds
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Bleeding gums
  • Cough with blood

Some patients may develop symptoms of an allergy after taking Elmiron capsules. Such symptoms include difficulty breathing, facial swelling, severe dizziness or hives on any part of body or on the entire body. Stop taking the capsules at once if you have any of these symptoms. Seek medical attention if any of these persist even after discontinuing the drug.

Your doctor will not recommend you to buy Elmiron if you are already taking any other blood thinners such as warfarin, abciximab, ticlopidine or heparin. Do not take any NSAIDs like aspirin, naproxen or ibuprofen along with Elmiron, as they may increase your risks of developing serious side effects of the drug. Serious drug interactions may occur if you take Elmiron along with mifepristone.

Warnings & Precautions of Elmiron

You should not use Elmiron if you have an allergy to any of the ingredients of the drug. Also inform your doctor beforehand if you have a blood clotting or bleeding disorder, stomach ulcer, liver disease, intestinal polyps, diverticulitis or history of a stroke or aneurysm.

In order to make sure that the drug is helping your condition, your doctor will need to conduct blood tests at regular intervals. Therefore, do not miss any scheduled appointments with your doctor.
