Description of Enbrel

Enbrel has Etanercept as its active ingredient, and it belongs to the class of drugs known as immunosuppressants. You can buy Enbrel in the form of a single-use pre-filled syringe, containing a sterile, colorless, clear, preservative-free solution. Apart from the major ingredient, the injectable solution also contains sucrose, L-arginine hydrochloride, sodium chloride, sodium phosphate, mannitol and tromethamine. Inform your doctor beforehand if you have an allergy to any of these ingredients.

Indications & Dosage of Enbrel

Enbrel is used for treating symptoms of psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis or rheumatoid arthritis, or for preventing joint damage due to any of these conditions. The drug can also be used for treating plaque psoriasis in adult patients and polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis in children at least 2 years of age. Enbrel works by reducing the action of TNF in the body that is produced by the immune system. It can only treat the symptoms, but cannot cure the condition.

For adult patients with rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis or psoriatic arthritis, the recommended dosage is Enbrel 50mg per week. Patients with plaque psoriasis are given Enbrel 50mg two times a week for the first 3 months, and then 50mg per week.

Children weighing less than 63kgs are given Enbrel 0.8mg/kg per week. Those weighing more than that are given Enbrel 50mg per week. The injection is given subcutaneously under the skin of the patient.

Side Effects & Interactions of Enbrel

Mild nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain, stuffy or runny nose, headache or cold symptoms may be commonly experienced by Enbrel patients. Inform your doctor at once if any of these persist or worsen. Some serious side effects associated with Enbrel include:

In some cases, Enbrel may lead to a serious condition known as lymphoma.
