Description of Epakitin
Epakitin is a pet medication containing Chitosan and Calcium Carbonate as its major ingredients. It falls under the therapeutic class of natural polysaccharides. When you buy Epakitin, it comes in the form of an edible powder that you can mix in your pet’s food. Apart from the major ingredients, the drug also contains lactose and hydrolyzed soy protein.
Indications & Dosage of Epakitin
Epakitin is used for the maintenance of normal kidney function in healthy pets, especially cats and dogs. It also helps in slowing down the progression of chronic kidney disease. It binds the phosphorus content in the pet’s body so that its absorption in the intestines is limited. In this way, damage caused due to chronic kidney disease is slowed down. It also reduces urea and creatinine level in the animal’s body, so that damage to the kidney is minimized. Remember that Epakitin does not cure any disease, but that it can only be used to maintain optimum health of animals.
Each Epakitin pack comes with a measuring scoop which can hold 1gm of the powder. The dosage given to the pet depends on its weight. The veterinarian will advise you to give Epakitin 1gm per 11 pounds of the pet’s weight, two times a day, preferably once in morning and once in the evening. Depending on the pet’s weight, age and medical condition, you may need to give the drug to your pet for its entire lifetime.
Side Effects & Interactions of Epakitin
Epakitin is a health supplement, and its aim is to boost your pet’s medical condition and to maintain its health. As such, there are no significant side effects experienced so far. However, look out for symptoms that the pet may develop, including constipation, panting, excessive drooling or diarrhea.
Some pets may be hypersensitive enough to develop an allergic reaction. Symptoms of an allergy include hives, excessive scratching, difficulty breathing, panting or fainting. Contact the veterinarian immediately if the pet suffers from any of these symptoms.
Before giving Epakitin to your pet, inform the veterinarian about all the medicines, health supplements and herbal products your pet is being given at present. Also inform the veterinarian if your pet is receiving Calcitriol or any other drug to regulate phosphorus or calcium level in the blood or to treat kidney disease. Such medicines may interact with Epakitin and lead to serious consequences.
Warnings & Precautions of Epakitin
Before you buy Epakitin, inform the veterinarian if your pet has a kidney disease, renal impairment or any other medical condition. Also do not administer it if your pet has an allergy to any ingredients in Epakitin.
Allow your dog or cat to take sufficient rest during Epakitin treatment. Also give it access to water so that it does not become dehydrated during the treatment. Inform the veterinarian beforehand if your pet is pregnant, lactating or breeding. Depending on this information, the veterinarian will be able to decide whether this health supplement is the right product for it or not.
