Description of Heartgard

Heartgard is an oral pet medication with the generic name Ivermectin. It is broad spectrum antiparasitic which belongs to anthelmintic class of drugs. Heartgard is available in the form of a chewable tablet. Heartgard for dogs is supplied in three strengths- Heartgard for dogs 68mcg, 136mcg, and 272mcg, while Heartgard for cats is supplied in two strengths- Heartgard for cats 55mcg and 165mcg. The drug is a prescription medication; you need to consult your veterinarian before you buy Heartgard online.

Indications & Dosage of Heartgard

Heartgard is used to prevent canine heartworm disease in dogs and prevent feline heartworm disease in cats. It also works to remove and control hookworms in cats. The medication is specifically prescribed to eliminate the tissue stage of heartworm larvae for a month after the infection. Heartgard is only indicated for use in dogs and cats aged 6 weeks or above.

Ivermectin, the active ingredient in the medication, binds itself to proteins secreted by worms that block the immune system of the host. With the defenses of worms rendered inactive, the white blood cells in the body work to kill the worms. Heartgard is also known to stimulate the excessive release of neurotransmitters in the parasite’s peripheral nervous system that is known to paralyze the parasite.

The dosage of Heartgard is different for dogs and cats and mainly depends on the weight of the animal. The medication is indicated to be given monthly. The recommended dose of Heartgard for dogs is:

  • For dogs weighing up to 25lb – one Heartgard chewable containing 68mcg Ivermectin
  • For dogs weighing 26 to 50lb - one Heartgard chewable containing 136mcg Ivermectin
  • For dogs weighing 51 to 100lb - one Heartgard chewable containing 272mcg Ivermectin

The recommended dose of Heartgard for cats is:

  • For cats weighing up to 5lb - one Heartgard chewable containing 55mcg Ivermectin
  • For cats weighing 5 to 15lb - one Heartgard chewable containing 165mcg Ivermectin
