Description of Hiprex

Hiprex is an oral medication with the generic name Methenamine. It belongs to a group of medicines known as anti-infectives. Hiprex is available in the form of a tablet. Each Hiprex tablet contains 1g Methenamine Hippurate. The drug is a prescription medication, so you need to consult your doctor before you buy Hiprex online.

Indications & Dosage of Hiprex

Hiprex is used to prevent and control the return of urinary tract infections caused by specific strains of bacteria. The drug is not useful to treat an active infection. Doctors generally recommend other antibiotics to treat the infection before recommending Hiprex in the treatment. The medication is indicated for use in the treatment of urinary tract infections only.

Hiprex contains one ingredient which makes the urine acidic. In an acidic environment, Methenamine gets converted into formaldehyde which kills the bacteria.

Your doctor will give you specific instructions regarding the dosage. The recommended adult dosage of Hiprex is 1 tablet, two times daily (morning and night). Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not break or chew it.

The recommended dose for pediatric patients aged between 6 to 12 years is ½ to 1 Hiprex tablet, two times daily. The drug is not indicated for use in pediatric patients aged less than 6 years.

Side Effects & Interactions of Hiprex

Like all other drugs, Hiprex may also cause mild to severe side effects in some patients. However, not all people who use this medication experience side effects. As a matter of fact, many people who use Hiprex do not complain about any side effects.

Nausea and vomiting are some mild side effects caused by Hiprex. These side effects are temporary and wane over time as your body gets used to the medication. If any of these side effects stay for long time or become problematic, you should inform your doctor.

Hiprex may also trigger severe side effects such as skin rash, lower back pain, burning sensation or pain while urinating, or blood in urine. Stop using the medication and consult your doctor if you experience severe side effect after taking a dose of Hiprex.

Hiprex may potentially interact with other medicines you are using and cause side effects. You should avoid taking drugs that make your urine more alkaline while taking Hiprex. Tell your doctor if you are using any drugs that contain urinary alkalizing agents such as Sodium Citrate, Potassium Citrate, or Sodium Bicarbonate.

Before you buy Hiprex, inform the doctor about every medicine you are using which includes prescription drugs, over the counter medications, and herbal supplements.

Warnings & Precautions of Hiprex

You should not use Hiprex if you are hypersensitive to any ingredient in it. It may not be the right drug for people with certain medical problems such as decreased liver functions, severe dehydration, gout, kidney infections, or metabolic acidosis (increased acid levels in the blood).

Hiprex is listed as a category C pregnancy drug. Pregnant women, nursing mothers or women planning to get pregnant should buy Hiprex only after learning about the benefits and risks of using the drug from their doctor.
