Description of Isoniazid

The generic name of Isoniazid is also Isoniazid, and it belongs to the category of antibacterial drugs. You can buy Isoniazid in the form of oral tablets. It is available in 100 and 300mg strengths, and each tablet also contains stearic acid, povidone, pregelatinized starch, lactose monohydrate and colloidal silicon dioxide.

Indications & Dosage of Isoniazid

Isoniazid is used for treating tuberculosis. Being an antibiotic, it works by fighting the bacteria responsible for the disease. It can also be used for the prevention of tuberculosis in patients who have tested positive in a TB skin test.

Adults are advised to take Isoniazid 5mg per kg up to 300mg per day, or Isoniazid 15mg per kg up to 900mg per day. You will have to take this dose two or three times a week. For pediatric patients, Isoniazid 10 to 15mg per kg up to 300mg per day is recommended. Some children may also be advised to be given Isoniazid 20 to 40mg per kg up to 900mg per day, taken 2 to 3 times per week.

Side Effects & Interactions of Isoniazid

Stomach upset, vomiting or nausea can commonly occur in Isoniazid patients. Contact your doctor at once if any of these symptoms persist or worsen. Also seek medical attention if you develop any serious side effects of Isoniazid. Such side effects include:

  • Painful or swollen joints
  • Numbness or tingling in the legs or arms
  • Increased or decreased thirst or urination
  • Vision changes
  • Mental or mood changes (e.g. psychosis or confusion)
  • Seizures
  • Easy bruising or bleeding
  • Signs of a new infection (e.g. persistent throat soreness, fever)
  • Unusual fatigue or weakness
  • Yellowing of eyes or skin
  • Dark urine

Some patients may also develop an allergic reaction after taking Isoniazid tablets. Discontinue the drug at once if you develop hives, severe dizziness, facial swelling or difficulty breathing. Seek medical help if any of these persist even after discontinuing Isoniazid.

Some of the medicinal products that may interfere with the working of Isoniazid or may increase its side effects include azole antifungals (e.g. ketoconazole or itraconazole), MAO inhibitors (e.g. linezolid or isocarboxazid), SSRI antidepressants (e.g. sertraline or fluoxetine), benzodiazepines (e.g. diazepam or alprazolam), valproic acid, theophylline, disulfira or carbamazepine. Your doctor will not recommend you to buy Isoniazid if you are already taking any of these drugs.

Warnings & Precautions of Isoniazid

Isoniazid may cause a serious liver disease, especially if you are more than 35 years of age, if you use illegal injection drugs or alcohol. Therefore, inform your doctor beforehand if you have a liver disease. Your doctor will also want to take your liver function tests, before prescribing Isoniazid. Inform your doctor at once if you develop symptoms of a liver disease, including dark urine, persistent vomiting or nausea, unusual weakness or tiredness, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or severe stomach or abdominal pain.

Also inform your doctor if you have an HIV infection, kidney disease, peripheral neuropathy, diabetes, or recent childbirth.
