Description of Isopto Homatropine

Isopto Homatropine has Homatropine Hydrobromide as its active ingredient, and it is available in the form of eye drops. It belongs to the therapeutic class of anticholinergics. You can buy Isopto Homatropine in 2% and 5% strengths. Apart from the major ingredient, the drug also contains inactive ingredients including sodium chloride, hydrochloric acid, sodium hydroxide, hypromellose and purified water.

Indications & Dosage of Isopto Homatropine

Isopto Homatropine is used for dilating the pupils before a diagnostic situation, after a surgery, or under inflammatory conditions such as uveitis. Isopto Homatropine works by widening your pupils so that they remain wide and do not respond to light. Your pupils are widened as the drug relaxes the muscles in your eye.

Before a diagnostic procedure, your doctor will apply 1-2 drops of Isopto Homatropine in your eyes. Your doctor may advise you to apply 1-2 eye drops every day after an eye surgery. If you are using Isopto Homatropine for treating uveitis or any other such eye condition, you may be advised to apply 1-2 eye drops in the affected eye 3 to 4 times a day. However, the dosage and duration of treatment depends on your medical condition and response to the treatment.

You should use the eye drops exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you accidentally apply too many drops inside your eye, you should wash it off immediately in order to avoid overdose.

Side Effects & Interactions of Isopto Homatropine

Slight burning in the eye immediately after applying the eye drops can be commonly experienced. However, seek medical attention immediately if the burning becomes severe.

Some of the side effects that patients using Isopto Homatropine eye drops can commonly experience include blurred vision, stinging, burning, increased sensitivity to light and swelling of the eyelids. Continue using the drug as prescribed if you develop any of these symptoms. However, inform your doctor without fail if any of these become intolerable.

Seek medical attention immediately if you have any serious side effects of Isopto Homatropine. These include fast or irregular heart rate, distended or swollen stomach, unusual behavior or hallucinations. Discontinue using the drug at once if you have symptoms of an allergy after using the eye drops. Such symptoms include swelling of the lips, face, tongue or throat, hives, closing of the throat, difficulty breathing or severe dizziness.

Usually, your doctor will not recommend you to buy Isopto Homatropine along with other medicines such as antiarrhythmic drugs (such as procainamide), antispasmodics (such as dicyclomine), antihistamines (such as meclizine or diphenhydramine), anti-Parkinson’s drugs (such as benzatropine or trihexyphenidyl), tricyclic antidepressants (such as amitriptyline) or MAO inhibitors (such as isocarboxazid or furazolidone).

Warnings & Precautions of Isopto Homatropine

Do not use Isopto Homatropine eye drops if you have an allergy to any of its ingredients, or if you have glaucoma or any other eye disease.

If you wear contact lenses, remove them before applying the eye drops. Wait for at least 15 minutes before you can re-insert them.

Breastfeeding mothers should not use Isopto Homatropine, as it may pass into their breast milk and harm the nursing infant.
