Description of Januvia

Januvia is an oral medication to treat diabetes. It is essentially for patients with Type 2 diabetes which is non-insulin-dependent. This drug helps control a diabetic patient’s blood sugar levels. It regulates the insulin levels produced in a patient’s body after eating. Sitagliptin is the generic name of this drug.

This medication is available as Januvia 25mg, Januvia 50mg and Januvia 100mg which contains 32.13, 64.25, and 128.5 mg of Sitagliptin phosphate monohydrate respectively. The other inactive ingredients include anhydrous dibasic calcium phosphate, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, croscarmellose sodium, and sodium stearyl fumarate. The film coating contains following inactive ingredients: talc, polyethylene glycol, red and yellow iron oxide, titanium dioxide and polyvinyl alcohol.

Indications & amp; Dosage of Januvia

Januvia in indicated as an adjunct to exercise and diet to improvise glycemic control in adult patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus. This drug is neither used to treat Type 1 diabetes, nor can it be used to treat diabetic ketoacidosis. Januvia may be taken with or without food.

The recommended dose is Januvia 100 mg a day. For patients with moderate renal insufficiency which approximately corresponds to serum creatinine levels of less or equal to 1.7 mg/dl and 1.5 mg/dl in men and women respectively, the recommended dose is Januvia 50mg a day. For patients with severe renal insufficiency approximately corresponding to more than 3 mg/dl and 2.5 mg/dl serum creatinine levels in men and women respectively, the recommended dose is Januvia 25 mg a day.

When Januvia is used in concomitant with an insulin secretagogue or with insulin, a lower dose of insulin secretagogue or insulin is to be used to minimize risk of hypoglycemia. This medicine should be avoided if a patient is in a state of diabetic ketoacidosis. A patient should take care not to let his or her blood sugar get too low by avoiding skipping meals, exercising too long, and drinking alcohol. The related symptoms of hypoglycemia include headache, hunger, weakness, irritability, tremors, or trouble concentrating.
