Description of Labstix Strips

Labstix Strips is used to check several constituents in the urine of a patient who has urinary track disease, diabetes mellitus etc.

You can buy Labstix Strips from any pharmacy. Read the instructions carefully on the patient leaflet before using the strips. If you have any doubt, ask your pharmacist. Use fresh urine specimen for the test. The specimen must not be older than four hours. Take the specimen in a clean and dry container. If you can’t conduct the test in four hours, keep the specimen in the refrigerator. Keep the specimen at room temperature at least 60 minutes before the test. Take out one strip from the bottle and close the bottle immediately. Dip the reagent area of the strip in the urine and remove immediately. Tap the edge of the strip against a dry surface or container to remove the excess of urine. Hold the strip vertically and compare the test area with the color scale on the label. Proper reagent time is very important in analyzing the results. Refer to the bottle label for the reagent time of each test. The color changes that take place after 2 minutes should be ignored. You must report to the doctor immediately if you find any positive changes after the test.

Indications & Dosage of Labstix Strips

The presence of protein, glucose and ketone in the human body can vary from normal to slightly abnormal without affecting the health of a person. Minute amounts of blood and protein are found in the urine of many people. If the level exceeds a certain limit, it may be the indication of many health problems.

Labstix Strips are used to analyze the following factors in the urine:

• pH
• Protein
• Glucose
• Ketone
• Blood

You must store Labstix Strips at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees Celsius. Keep the strips away from heat, moisture and direct light. Keep it away from the reach of children and pets. Close the lid of the bottle tightly when not in use. If you are using the strips for a long time, keep it in the refrigerator between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius. Don’t freeze. Keep the strips at room temperature at least 30 minutes before use. Don’t use the strips after the expiry date. Make sure that you are not touching any reagent area. Don’t reuse the strips. Labstix Strips comes in a plastic container. Once the strips are past the expiry date, dispose of the container. Don’t dispose it in the drainage and kitchen sink.

Warnings & Precautions of Labstix Strips

One of the major disadvantages of Labstix Strips is that a single test cannot come to an accurate therapeutic decision as compared to a series of lab tests.

While measuring glucose and ketones, the results obtained by measuring these in the urine may not be as accurate as the blood glucose level tests. Diabetic patients must see Labstix Strips only as a screening tool and continue to administer insulin if required.

Certain drugs like nutritional and herbal supplements give false results on Labstix Strips. You must inform your doctor about all your previous and current medications before you buy Labstix Strips. This includes over-the-counter medications, herbal preparations, vitamins and minerals.
