Description of Lescol
Lescol is available as 20mg and 40mg capsules containing equal amounts of fluvastatin sodium (active ingredient) and the following inactive components: magnesium stearate, calcium carbonate, microcrystalline cellulose, sodium bicarbonate, pregelatinized starch, titanium dioxide, talc and oxides of iron. The generic name of Lescol is Fluvastatin.
Patients suffering from high cholesterol and triglyceride levels may be asked to buy Lescol. It belongs to a class of medicines called statins (or cholesterol lowering drugs). Lescol works by inhibiting the action of certain enzymes (known as HMG CoA reductase) involved in cholesterol production.
Indications & Dosage of Lescol
Lescol has more than one indication, but is primarily used as a medication for lowering ‘bad’ or LDL cholesterol levels, reducing triglycerides, and increasing the production of HDL or ‘good’ cholesterol in those individuals for whom exercise and low cholesterol diet plans do not sufficiently improve their health. Lescol is also effective in preventing or controlling certain coronary diseases like atherosclerosis.
It is important for patients who buy Lescol to take it exactly as instructed by the doctor. Administering Lescol in incorrect doses may cause unwanted health issues. The recommended dosage ranges between 20mg and 80mg per day:
- For patients with cholesterol levels higher than required by 25%- 40mg capsules once or twice daily
- For patients whose cholesterol levels exceed the target by less than 25%- starting total dose of 20mg which can be increased as per a doctor’s discretion.
It is advisable to divide doses evenly. The capsules should be swallowed as supplied with a glass of water. Maintaining consistency with regards to time and food is important.
Side Effects & Interactions of Lescol
Side effects of Lescol may vary from patient to patient depending on their tolerance levels, other medications, and general health. Some of the minor side effects that are common among Lescol users are as follows:
- Constipation, diarrhea, stomach pain
- Heartburn, gas, belching
- Fatigue
- Insomnia
- Joint ache
The above mentioned problems do not usually require medical attention as the body copes with them in time. The following list includes some of the major side effects of Lescol that may imply serious underlying disorders or cause potential harm if not treated immediately.
- Severe skin problems like rashes, peeling, blistering etc.
- Dark stools or urine
- Severe abdominal pain
- Jaundice
- Appetite loss, vomiting and nausea
- Difficulties with maintaining balance
- Weakness in the muscles, numbness and tingling in the limbs
- Fever
Lescol patients should inform their doctors about all other drugs that are being used by them, in order to avoid severe instances of negative drug interactions in the body. Some medications should be avoided or co-administered with caution. Doctors prescribe controlled doses keeping in mind various factors and as such, no new medications should be started or stopped without notifying the doctor. Some medicines known to interact with Lescol are rifampin, digoxin, cyclosporine, warfarin, ranitidine, colestipol, omeprazole, glyburide and other statins.
Lescol also interacts adversely with grapefruit and grapefruit juice.
Warnings & Precautions of Lescol
Patients who take erythromycin, niacin containing drugs, cancer medicines, steroids, fluconazole or gemfebrozil are at an increased risk of kidney failure along with individuals who have hypothyroidism or existing kidney disorders.
Alcohol and foods high in cholesterol should be avoided. Lescol is contraindicated in individuals with serious liver damage, during pregnancy, and in nursing women.
