Description of Lexapro

Lexapro is an antidepressant which may be prescribed to children above 12 years and adults with major depressive disorders. Escitalopram, the active ingredient present in Lexapro, is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor and works by controlling certain chemicals in the brain that lead to depression and anxieties. Patients may buy Lexapro in the form of tablets or as oral solutions. The tablets are supplied in three different strengths- Lexapro 5mg, 10mg and 20mg. The 240ml Lexapro oral solution contains escitalopram at the rate of 1mg per ml.

Indications & Dosage of Lexapro

Patients suffering from any of the following disorders and fulfilling the conditions can buy Lexapro with doctor’s advice:

  • Unipolar disorder (also known as major depressive disorder or MDD) in individuals over the age of 12.
  • Generalized Anxiety disorder (or GAD) in people over 18 years.

Dosage of Lexapro is highly individualized and ascertained as per the doctor’s evaluation. The general idea about the dosage recommended usually (without reference to other medications, health conditions, etc.) is given as under:

  • MDD- for children (12-17 years): Starting daily dose is 10mg administered as one tablet. This may be increased to 20 mg after a minimum period of 3 weeks.
  • MDD- for adults (above 18 years): Initial dose is a single 10mg tablet, taken once a day. If the doctor thinks a required increase in dosage, 20mg tablets (once daily) may be taken after a minimum period of 1 week.

Side Effects & Interactions of Lexapro

Also, patients relating to the following conditions should consult their doctors before using Lexapro: bipolar disorder, history of suicidal attempts or drug addictions, seizures/epilepsy and renal or liver disorder.

Lexapro may cause birth defects in the child if taken during pregnancy. It also passes into breast milk and may harm an infant being breast fed by a Lexapro patient.

Suicidal thoughts and worsening of depression may occur before Lexapro becomes fully effective.
