Description of Lipitor

Lipitor falls under the category of drugs known as HMG CoA reductase inhibitors, which are more commonly known as “statins”. People generally buy Lipitor to lower cholesterol. Lipitor works by reducing bad cholesterol. It also simultaneously increases the levels of good cholesterol. The generic name of Lipitor is atorvastatin.

Lipitor is available in the form of tablets in 4 different strengths- Lipitor 10mg, Lipitor 20mg, Lipitor 40mg, and Lipitor 80mg.

Indications & Dosage of Lipitor

Lipitor is generally indicated for the treatment of high cholesterol. The drug also reduces the risk of fatal occurrences like heart attacks, strokes and other heart related issues in patients suffering from coronary heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, or certain other medical conditions.

One can buy Lipitor for both children and adults.

The administration of the drug should be done as per the doctor’s prescription. Taking a higher or lower dose than prescribed may lead to severe health complications. Generally, the recommended dose for starters is either 10mg or 20mg tablets once a day. For patients who need a higher dose to trigger a dip in LDL levels, a dose of 40mg is recommended. Lipid levels are checked 2-4 weeks into the treatment, which may give rise to certain changes in dosing, if required. Lipitor is to be stored at room temperature, away from excess moisture and heat.

Side Effects & Interactions of Lipitor

Lipitor users may experience certain side effects. Some side effects do not harm the body and tend to wear off within a short span of time. Some of the minor side effects of Lipitor are as follows:

  • Stomach problems;
  • Stuffy or runny nose;
  • Joint pain and ache;
  • Diarrhea;
  • Nausea;
  • Mild sore throat

Certain other side effects may also be experienced by Lipitor users that are not as harmless as the aforementioned symptoms. These side effects tend to persist and often need urgent medical attention to be dealt with. The serious side effects of Lipitor are:

  • Severe allergic reactions like breathing trouble, rashes, swelling, hives, itching, and chest tightness;
  • Changes in urinating pattern and color;
  • Loss of appetite;
  • Severe nausea and vomiting;
  • Jaundice;
  • Muscle pain and weakness;
  • Peeling or blistered skin;
  • Unusual fatigue

Drug interactions are also possible if other incompatible substances are taken alongside Lipitor. A doctor should be consulted before taking drugs like imatinib, spironolactone, cimetidine, contraceptive pills, conivaptan, antibiotics, antidepressants, other “statins”, heart medications, blood pressure medications, and HIV/AIDS drugs, along with Lipitor. Other drugs may also interact with Lipitor. To prevent such interactions, it is best to talk to the doctor regarding any other drug the user might be taking.

Warnings & Precautions of Lipitor

Lipitor should not be used by patients suffering from liver problems. People with kidney disease should be extremely careful while using the drug as it can lead it to kidney failure through a breakdown of the skeletal muscle tissues. This is a rare occurrence, but a possible occurrence nonetheless.

People allergic to atorvastatin should not buy Lipitor

A doctor should be consulted if a patient has any liver or kidney problems, thyroid issues, or diabetes

Pregnant and breastfeeding women should not take Lipitor
