Description of Lumigan

Lumigan is one of the synthetic prostamide analogs with ocular pressure lowering activities. The active ingredient in the drug is Bimatoprost, and you can buy Lumigan in the form of an ophthalmic solution.

Indications & Dosage of Lumigan

Lumigan is indicated for the treatment of certain types of glaucoma, along with other conditions that lead to increased pressure inside the eyes. It works by increasing the outflow of fluid from the eye and thereby draining excess fluid from the eye. In this way, fluid does not get built up in the eye, and ocular pressure is decreased. In some cases, Lumigan can also be used for improving length, color and fullness of eyelashes in patients suffering from hypotrichosis, a medical condition in which a person’s eyelash growth is stopped.

Usually, your doctor will recommend you to apply one drop of Lumigan ophthalmic solution into your affected eye once a day. Do not apply the eye drops more than once a day, unless advised by your doctor. Using more Bimatoprost than required may reduce the intraocular pressure lowering effects of the drug.

Your ocular pressure starts decreasing after at least 4 hours of applying the eye drops for the first time. Maximum effects are obtained after around 8 to 12 hours.

You can use other ophthalmic drugs along with Lumigan. However, try to keep a gap of at least 5 minutes between each of them.

Side Effects & Interactions of Lumigan

Common side effects associated with Lumigan include:

  • Dizziness
  • Mild eye discomfort
  • Feeling as if there is something inside the eye
  • Watery or dry eyes
  • Burning or stinging in the eyes after applying the eye drops

These are mild side effects of Lumigan and subside as your body adjusts to the drug. However, you must inform your doctor immediately if any of these become intolerable. Seek medical attention immediately if you develop any of the following serious side effects of the drug:

  • Increased sensitivity to light
  • Vision changes
  • Itching, pain, swelling or redness in or around the eye
  • Discharge or oozing from the eye

Lumigan is safe to be used along with other ophthalmic drugs, including eye drops and eye ointments. If you are using ointments, apply the eye drops before the ointment. If you apply the ointment before using the eye drops, the eye drops will not be absorbed by the eye because of the film created by ointment. Apart from these, inform your doctor about any other treatments you are going through for your eyelashes.

Warnings & Precautions of Lumigan

Before you buy Lumigan, inform your doctor if you have an allergy to it, or to any other similar drugs such as travoprost or latanoprost. The drug may also contain preservatives such as benzalkonium chloride which may trigger your allergic reaction.

Your doctor will not recommend you to use Lumigan if you are suffering from any other eye problem such as iritis, lens extraction, aphakia, uveitis or macular edema. Also inform your doctor if you recently had an eye injury, surgery, or infection.
