Description of Marquis Paste
Marquis Paste is a veterinary medication suitable only for oral use in horses. The generic name of this oral paste is ponazuril. You can buy Marquis Paste in the form of a 127g ready-to-inject syringe that contains 15% w/w of the active ingredient ponazuril. Each gram of the paste would contain 150mg ponazuril. One syringe of Marquis would be enough for treating a horse that weighs around 1,200lbs for seven days. Ponazuril, which is the active ingredient of Marquis Paste, is an antiprotozoal drug that can be effective against several forms of protozoa in the family of phylum Apicomplexa.
Indications & Dosage of Marquis Paste
Marquis Paste is indicated specifically for the treatment of a rare protozoan infection known as EPM, or equine protozoan myeloencephalitis. This infection affects a horse’s central nervous system, and the number of cases of this infection has been increasing.
Your veterinarian would prescribe 5mg/kg or 2.27mg/lb of Marquis Paste once in 28 days. You would be given detailed instructions on how to administer Marquis Paste. If you have any doubts about the procedure, you may ask your veterinarian or pharmacist.
Before you administer Marquis Paste, you must assemble the syringe barrel and plunger. The plunger needs to be cleaned thoroughly and it should be dry. You can see detailed instructions on how to assemble the syringe and prepare it for administration on the instructions label of the pack. You must weigh the horse beforehand to calculate the right dosage of Marquis Paste. The syringe pack can be used multiple times.
To administer Marquis Paste to your horse, you need to remove the end cap of the paste pack and apply slight pressure on the plunger until you see the paste at the tip. Measure the dose by using the barrel collar and dosage ring collar. Once you have set the right dosage, you can deposit the paste onto the top and back of the tongue of the horse. To do this, you need to introduce the tip of the Marquis Paste syringe into the mouth of the horse at the area between the back teeth and front teeth. Depress the plunger as far as you can, and then remove the tip from the mouth.
Side Effects & Interactions of Marquis Paste
Marquis Paste may cause certain side effects such as blisters on the mouth and nose. It may also lead to hives or skin rashes for a period of two to three weeks. Apart from this, you may notice loose stools throughout the period of treatment with Marquis Paste. Some rare side effects of Marquis Paste would include mild colic and seizures.
Warnings & Precautions of Marquis Paste
This oral paste is only suitable for use in horses. It should not be consumed by any other animal or humans. You must keep Marquis Paste away from the reach of children. Before you buy Marquis Paste, your veterinarian must diagnose your horse and determine it to be EPM, and not any other disease that could cause ataxia. The safety of Marquis Paste in breeding or lactating mares has not been established completely.
