Description of Maxalt

Maxalt belongs to the class of triptans, and its generic name is Rizatriptan Benzoate. You can buy Maxalt in the form of oral tablets.

Indications & Dosage of Maxalt

Maxalt is an oral medication used for treating migraines. It helps in relieving symptoms of migraines, including headache, vomiting, nausea, and sensitivity to sound or light. It works by narrowing the blood vessels in the patient’s brain and reducing the substances that are responsible for triggering migraine symptoms. You must remember that Maxalt can only relieve migraine symptoms, but it cannot prevent migraine attacks in the future or reduce their frequency or intensity.

A single dose of Maxalt 5mg to 10mg is enough for acute treatment of a migraine attack. You will have to take only one tablet whenever a migraine attack gets triggered. If the desired effects are not achieved, you can repeat the dose at a gap of at least 2 hours. The maximum dosage you can receive in a day is Maxalt 30mg.

The correct way of taking the oral dissolving tablet is to place it on your tongue and let it dissolve. Do not chew the tablet while it is dissolving. If required, you can drink water to swallow the dissolved tablet.

Side Effects & Interactions of Maxalt

Maxalt patients may commonly experience some of the following side effects:

  • Mild headache, different from a migraine
  • Mild nausea, dry mouth
  • Heaviness or pressure in any body part
  • Dizziness, tiredness or drowsiness
  • Redness, mild tingling or warmth under the skin

Seek medical attention immediately if you develop any of the following serious side effects of the drug:

  • Tightness or pain in the jaw, throat or neck
  • Chest pain, heaviness, nausea, general ill feeling, sweating, or pain spreading to the shoulder or arm
  • Sudden weakness or numbness in one side of the body
  • Confusion, sudden severe headache, problems with speech, balance or vision
  • Sudden severe pain in the stomach, bloody diarrhea
  • Tingling or numbness, bluish or pale appearance in the toes or fingers

You may start experiencing agitation, fever, hallucinations, vomiting, fainting, loss of coordination, diarrhea, overactive reflexes, or fast heart rate if you are taking antidepressants at present.

Do not buy Maxalt if you are already taking any of the following drugs:

  • Sibutramine, propranolol
  • MAO inhibitors (such as isocarboxazid or phenelzine)
  • Antidepressants (such as fluoxetine or venlafaxine)
  • Ergotamine medicines (such as methysergide or dihydroergotamine)
  • Other triptan drugs (such as sumatriptan or zolmitriptan)
  • Any drugs that cause dizziness, including sedatives, narcotic pain relievers, muscle relaxants, anti-seizure medicines, sleeping pills, psychiatric drugs, or tranquilizers.

Warnings & Precautions of Maxalt

Do not use Maxalt if you are suffering from heart disease (such as heart attack or chest pain), decreased flow of blood to the brain (such as transient ischemic attack or stroke), hypertension, blood circulation disease (such as ischemic bowel disease) or certain types of headache (such as basilar migraine or hemiplegic headache).

Special tests and dosage adjustments will be needed if you have kidney or liver disease or a blood circulation disorder such as Raynaud’s disease. Also inform your doctor if you have a family history of high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, high cholesterol, or an addiction to nicotine.
