Description of Megace

Megace is the brand name for megestrol, which is a synthesized form of progesterone, a natural female hormone. This particular medication is known to increase appetite in most people. You can buy Megace in the form of a 40mg table or an oral suspension solution with lemon flavor. Each ml of the Megace suspension contains megestrol 40mg. Other inactive ingredients used in this suspension include alcohol, lemon-lime flavor, sodium citrate and benzoate and polyethylene glycol. You must consult your doctor before buying this drug.

Indications & Dosage of Megace

Megace is indicated for treating cachexia, anorexia and significant and unusual weight loss in HIV/AIDS patients. Megace is also indicated as part of treatment for advanced endometrial and breast cancer. Your doctor may also prescribe Megace for other medical conditions.

Your doctor would determine the dosage and duration of treatment with Megace. You must never take Megace in a dose larger than what was prescribed, as it may result in an overdose. You would receive a dose measurement cup along with Megace suspension to ensure that you take exactly the right dose. If you do not get one, however, you may ask your pharmacist for one. In any case, you should not take Megace without a dose measurement cup or by using a regular tablespoon.

Megace is also available in different variants, like Megace ES. You must only take the variant of Megace prescribed to you. Any change in brand and strength would require a change in dosage as well. You can ask your pharmacist if you have any doubts regarding the brand and strength of Megace.

Your dosage of Megace might change in certain conditions, such as a surgery, excessive stress or an infection. Your doctor may schedule regular visits to check for such conditions and adjust the dosage accordingly. Therefore, you must not miss out on any of these visits.
