Description of Mesnex

Mesna is the active ingredient in Mesnex, and it falls under the category of detoxifying agents. You can buy Mesnex in the form of oral, oblong, white, scored biconvex film coated tablets. In addition to 400mg Mesna, the tablets also contain excipients including lactose, calcium phosphate, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, povidone, cornstarch, polyethylene glycol, hydroxypropyl ethylcellulose, simethicone and titanium dioxide.

Indications & Dosage of Mesnex

Mesnex is used for preventing bleeding in the patient’s bladder during chemotherapy treatment with ifosfamide. It protects the bladder lining from damage due to ifosfamide. When a patient is treated with ifosfamide, his or her body breaks it down to form a substance that harms the bladder. Mesnex works by making this substance less harmful.

Your doctor will advise you to take Mesnex equivalent to 40% of the dosage of ifosfamide you are given. You will have to take the tablet after around 2 to 6 hours of receiving ifosfamide. The dose is repeated every time you receive ifosfamide.

Side Effects & Interactions of Mesnex

Some of the side effects commonly associated with Mesnex include:

• Nausea, vomiting
• Stomach pain
• Decreased appetite
• Diarrhea
• Flushing
• Dizziness
• Pale skin
• Increased skin sensitivity, skin rash
• Fever
• Cold or cough symptoms
• Low blood pressure
• Water retention or swelling

These are mild side effects of the drug and subside on their own within a few hours or days after receiving the drug. However, inform your doctor at once if any of these become intolerable. Also seek medical attention immediately if you notice red or pink colored urine, as it may be a sign of a serious underlying condition and should be treated as soon as possible.

Some patients with increased hypersensitivity may develop a serious allergic reaction after taking Mesnex. Symptoms of an allergy include hives, difficulty breathing, facial swelling or severe dizziness. Inform your doctor without fail if you develop any of these symptoms.

Before you buy Mesnex, inform your doctor about all the other medicines you are taking at present, including herbal preparations and health supplements. Based on this information, your doctor will be able to decide whether Mesnex should be given to you or not, and what its dosage should be.

Warnings & Precautions of Mesnex

Before taking Mesnex, inform your doctor if you have an autoimmune disorder like systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis or nephritis.

Your doctor will advise you to drink at least 4 cups of liquid every day, as you may become dehydrated during the treatment.

As Mesnex makes you dizzy, do not get involved in any activities that require you to be completely alert, such as operating a machine or driving a vehicle. Otherwise, a serious accident may take place. Also limit alcohol intake, as it may worsen the side effect.

Inform your doctor immediately if you notice redness in your urine. However, make sure that the red color of your urine is not due to a food item or dye.
