Description of Mestinon

Mestinon is a cholinesterase inhibitor, and its active ingredient is Pyridostigmine. You can buy Mestinon in the form of oral tablets.

Indications & Dosage of Mestinon

Mestinon is an oral medication used for improving muscle strength in patients suffering from myasthenia gravis. The drug works by preventing the breakdown of acetylcholine in the patient’s body. Acetylcholine is a natural substance essential for the normal functioning of the muscles.

Each Mestinon timespan tablet contains 180mg of Pyridostigmine Bromide, while a conventional Mestinon tablet contains 60mg of the drug. If you are using conventional tablets, you will need to take ten Mestinon 60mg tablets a day. In some cases, you may also be asked to take as many as 25 tablets per day.

If you are using Mestinon timespan tablets, you will need to take three Mestinon 180mg tablets once or twice a day. You will have to take the tablets with milk or food if you suffer from a stomach upset. You will also need to swallow the tablets whole, without breaking, crushing or chewing them.

Side Effects & Interactions of Mestinon

Mestinon patients may commonly experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Pale skin, cold sweat
  • Increased urination
  • Watery eyes
  • Mild vomiting, nausea, stomach upset
  • Tingling or warm feeling
  • Mild itching or skin rash

Although these are mild side effects of the drug, inform your doctor if any of these become too bothersome. Also seek medical help immediately if you develop any of the following serious side effects of Mestinon:

  • Extreme muscle weakness or twitching
  • Vision problems, slurred speech
  • Severe diarrhea or vomiting
  • Coughing with mucus
  • Confusion, panic attacks, anxiety
  • Seizures
  • No improvement of myasthenia gravis, or worsening of the condition

Some hypersensitive patients may also have an allergic reaction after taking Mestinon tablets. Symptoms of such a reaction include hives on any part of the body or on the entire body, swelling or itching of the tongue, lips, throat or face, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. Stop taking the medicine promptly if you suffer from any of these symptoms. Seek medical attention if your symptoms persist even after discontinuing the drug.

Warnings & Precautions of Mestinon

Your doctor will not recommend you to buy Mestinon if you have an allergy to any of its ingredients or if you have a bowel or bladder obstruction. Your doctor will need to take some special tests or make some necessary dosage adjustments if you have high blood pressure, stomach disorder, ulcer, kidney or heart disease, asthma, seizures or an overactive thyroid. Inform your doctor beforehand if you have any of these medical conditions.

If you are to undergo a surgery, inform your surgeon beforehand that you are on Mestinon treatment. He or she may advise you to stop taking the drug temporarily.

Mestinon may cause dizziness and blurred vision. Therefore, you should be careful while performing tasks such as driving a vehicle or operating a machine.
