Description of Mevacor

Mevacor is a cholesterol-lowering agent, statin or HMG CoA reductase inhibitor containing Lovastatin as its active ingredient. You can buy Mevacor in the form of oral tablets, available in 20mg and 40mg strengths. Apart from the active ingredient, the tablets also contain starch, magnesium stearate, lactose and glucose. Butylated hydroxyanisole is added for preservation.

Indications & Dosage of Mevacor

Mevacor is used for reducing bad cholesterol and triglycerides and increasing good cholesterol levels in the patient’s blood. This helps lower the risks of heart attack, stroke and heart complications in patients with coronary heart disease, diabetes or any other risk factors. This medicine is not meant to be used by patients less than 10 years of age.

The treatment starts with Mevacor 20mg per day, usually with your evening meal. The maximum dosage you may receive is Mevacor 80mg a day.

In addition to taking the tablets on time, your doctor will also advise you to follow a diet plan strictly. You should follow your doctor’s instructions properly. You can take the tablets with food.

Side Effects & Interactions of Mevacor

Mevacor patients can commonly experience headache, joint, muscle or back pain, mild nausea, stomach pain, constipation, indigestion or sleep problems. These are common side effects of the drug and should subside on their own within a few days of starting the treatment. However, seek medical attention if any of these persist or worsen or if you develop any serious side effects of the drug. Symptoms of such side effects include:

  • Unexplained muscle tenderness, weakness or pain
  • Unusual tiredness, dark colored urine, fever
  • Weight gain, swelling, decreased or stopped urination
  • Chest pain
  • Upper stomach pain, nausea, dark urine, loss of appetite, itching, jaundice, yellowing of eyes or skin, clay-colored stools

In some cases, Mevacor may lead to a serious muscle problem termed as rhabdomyolysis. Symptoms of this condition include decreased or increased urination, muscle tenderness, weakness or pain, accompanied by unusual tiredness or fever. Notify your doctor at once if you develop any of these symptoms.

Your doctor will not recommend you to buy Mevacor if you are already taking blood thinners (e.g. warfarin), azole antifungals (e.g. ketoconazole or itraconazole), macrolide antibiotics (e.g. erythromycin or clarithromycin), HIV protease inhibitors (e.g. ritonavir), or drugs such as colchicine, nefazodone, delavirdine or telithromycin. Also do not take Mevacor along with any other statin medicine (e.g. fluvastatin, atorvastatin, simvastatin o rosuvastatin).

Warnings & Precautions of Mevacor

Do not use Mevacor if you have allergy to any of its ingredients, or if you have a severe liver disease. Special tests and dosage adjustments may be needed if you have history of a liver or kidney disease or if you have a thyroid disorder or diabetes. You will also need to limit your alcohol intake during Mevacor treatment. Do not use the drug if you drink more than two alcoholic beverages everyday.

Mevacor is not recommended to pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers, as it may cause harm to the unborn child and nursing infants.
