Description of Mirena

The active ingredient in Mirena is Levonorgestrel. It is one of the intrauterine contraceptives, inserted into a woman’s uterus through the vagina.

Indications & Dosage of Mirena

Mirena is a small device placed inside a woman’s uterus to prevent a pregnancy. It works by releasing Levonorgestrel inside the woman’s body. It is a hormone that changes the woman’s uterine lining and the cervical mucus so that male sperm cannot reach the uterus and pregnancy does not take place.

Each Mirena device contains 52mg of Levonorgestrel hormone. It releases 20mcg of the hormone every day, up to a period of 5 years. After that, the rate of releasing the hormone decreases, and its effectiveness to prevent pregnancy is reduced. If you want to continue enjoying its benefits, you will have to get it replaced after 5 years.

Side Effects & Interactions of Mirena

Once you have got Mirena inserted into your vagina, you may start experiencing the following symptoms:

• Irregular vaginal bleeding
• Cramps
• Nausea
• Acne
• Headache
• Breast pain
• Hair loss
• Weight gain
• Decreased interest in sex

These are common side effects of the hormone and are experienced only in the initial stages of treatment. After a few days, these are supposed to subside on their own as your body adjusts to it. However, you should contact your doctor immediately if any of these become intolerable or if they do not subside within 2 months of inserting Mirena.

Some serious side effects associated with Mirena include:

• Lack of menstrual periods
• Chills
• Depression
• Mood changes
• Painful intercourse
• Unexplained fever
• Difficulty breathing
• Vaginal itching and swelling
• Severe headache

Seek medical attention immediately if you have yellowing of the eyes or skin, persistent nausea, abdominal pain, pelvic pain, lumps in the breasts, dark urine, trouble urinating, prolonged vaginal bleeding, or unusual vaginal odor or discharge after insertion of the device. Your doctor may decide to remove the device from your vagina.

Some of the medicinal products that may interact with Mirena include:

• Drugs that induce enzyme production (e.g. CYP3A4)
• Drugs that decrease serum concentration in Levonorgestrel (e.g. barbiturates, felbamate, bosentan, griseofulvin, carbamazepine, rifampin, topiramate, oxcarbazepine or phenytoin)
• HIV protease inhibitors
• Non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors

Warnings & Precautions of Mirena

Mirena is inserted in your uterus only if you have given birth to at least one live child and if you are in sexual contact with only one person. Your doctor will not recommend you to buy Mirena if you have a history of ectopic pregnancy, a sexually transmitted disease, or pelvic inflammatory disease.

Once Mirena has been inserted in your uterus, two threads will hang inside your vagina. Your doctor will advise you to feel them after every menstrual period in order to make sure that the device has not moved from its place.
