Description of Omnipaque

Iohexol is the generic name of Omnipaque and is a water-soluble, nonionic, radiographic contrast medium. Omnipaque can vary from being a colorless solution to pale-yellow solution and contains iodine concentrations in 140, 180, 240, 300, and 350 mgI/mL. Omnipaque 140 contains iohexol 302 mg, which is equivalent to organic iodine 140 mg. Each mL of Omnipaque solution contains 0.1 mg edetate calcium disodium whose pH has been adjusted to 6.8 or 7.7 using sodium hydroxide or hydrochloric acid and 1.21 mg tromethamine. Indications & Dosage of Omnipaque

Omnipaque is intrathecally administered to adults during myelography for thoracic, lumbar, total columnar and cervical issues. It is also intrathecally administered for contrast enhancement to aid computerized tomography including cisternography and ventriculography. Omnipaque 180 is most commonly intrathecally administered in children to assist myelography and cisternography.

The recommended total dosage for adults is Omnipaque 180, 240 or 300 and is used in thoracic, lumbar, total columnar and cervical myelography. The total dose should not exceed a maximum of 3060 mg of iodine. Omnipaque 350 is the recommended dosage for adults during selective coronary arteriography, left ventriculography, and aortic root injections and is recommended for children for angiocardiography. Omnipaque 300 is recommended for use in infants for angiocardiography.

Side Effects & Interactions of Omnipaque

Omnipaque can lead to mild or moderate side effects with clearly visible symptoms. Some of the side effects caused by Omnipaque include:

Omnipaque is known to interact with other medicines like phenothiazine derivatives, metformin, codeine, rosiglitazone, potassium iodide, betamethasone, phenylpropanolamine, potassium guaiacolsulfonate, chloroquine, pseudoephedrine, ciprofloxacin, citalopram, clozapine, imipenem, pyrilamine, guaifenesin, tacrine, and hydrocodone.

Warnings & Precautions of Omnipaque

Iohexol is not known to cause harm to the fetus, but it is advised that you not buy Omnipaque without consulting your doctor during pregnancy. There is no data which shows Iohexol passes into breast milk, but most doctors ask breastfeeding mothers to avoid Omnipaque during breastfeeding. An overdose of Omnipaque is not recommended. Patients over the age of 60 are more susceptible to the side effects and as such, caution needs to be exercised.

You need to discuss your medical history with the doctor prior to the administration of Omnipaque. You need to inform him/her if you have undergone surgery or if you:
