Description of Pradaxa

Pradaxa is a direct thrombin inhibitor. The generic name of this drug is Dabigatran. This drug is administered orally. You can buy Pradaxa in form of oral capsules, which are available in following strengths, Pradaxa 75 mg and 150 mg.

The inactive ingredients present in this drug are: dimethicone, acacia, hydroxypropyl cellulose, tartaric acid, talc, and hypromellose.

Indications & Dosage of Pradaxa

Pradaxa is prescribed to patients with atrial fibrillation to reduce their risks of developing blood clots and stroke. This drug works by blocking the activity of thrombin, which facilitates blood clotting in several ways.

The recommended dosage for patients with normal renal function is 150 mg of Pradaxa twice daily. Patients who suffer from moderate renal insufficiency are administered a lower dosage of 75 mg of Pradaxa twice daily.

Side Effects & Interactions of Pradaxa

Serious side effects of this drug may include the following:

  • Brown or pink urine
  • Unusual bleeding, easy bruising, red or purple pinpoint spots
  • Blood in the stools or urine, dark colored stools
  • Joint swelling or pain
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Weakness
