Description of Proscar

Proscar is prescribed to men with enlarged prostrate. The generic name of this drug is Finasteride. This drug is administered orally and is available in form of oral tablets. The oral tablets contain Proscar 5mg.

Nonmedical ingredients present in the oral tablets are: microcrystalline cellulose, hydrous lactose, sodium starch glycolate, yellow iron oxide, pregelatinized starch, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, titanium dioxide, talc, magnesium stearate, Docusate sodium, and hydroxypropyl cellulose.

Indications & Dosage of Proscar

Proscar is indicated for the treatment of benign prostate hyperplasia, commonly known as enlarged prostate.

There is one standard dosage of Proscar, that is, 5 mg per day. You should take your dosage with water. Taking the oral tablet with or without food is your choice. Patients who experience epigastric discomfort (symptoms are: stomach cramps, flatulence, constipation, mild diarrhea, mild nausea, bloating) due to Proscar should consider taking their daily dosage with food.

To ensure the treatment is effective you must take the medicine exactly as directed by your doctor. Proscar may take up to six months to show noticeable improvement in your condition.

Side Effects & Interactions of Proscar

You must consult your healthcare provider immediately if you show any of the following side effects: breast lumps, nipple discharge, pain, or any other breast changes. The aforementioned symptoms may be early signs of male breast cancer.

Stop using Proscar and seek immediate medical help if you experience a hypersensitivity reaction after taking the drug. A hypersensitivity reaction is marked by the following symptoms: wheezing, difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue, closing of the throat, or severe skin rashes.

In addition to the above, other recorded side effects of Proscar include the following:

  • Decreased libido
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Low ejaculation volume
  • Reduced interest in sex
  • Tenderness or swelling in the breasts
  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Runny nose
  • Headache

Consult your doctor if any of these side effects are severe or continue to occur for a long time.

Other drugs are not likely to interact with Proscar. However, chances of interactions between other drugs and Proscar cannot be completely ruled out. So, patients who are taking other medicines, including non-prescription and herbal medicines should inform their doctor about it before they buy Proscar.

Warnings & Precautions of Proscar

If you have a known allergy to Finasteride, you should not buy Proscar. Before starting treatment, inform your healthcare provider if you are unable to pass urine, have/had a severe liver disease, disorder of the bladder muscle, prostate cancer, or urethra stricture, or are allergic to dutasteride (a medicine that is similar to Proscar)

Taking Proscar may put you at a greater risk to prostate cancer. Your doctor may perform certain tests before and during treatment to ensure the drug is safe for you.

Proscar is to be used only by adult men. Women and children should never use this drug. Your skin can absorb Finasteride if you come in contact with a crushed or broken Proscar tablet. This drug can cause congenital abnormalities in a newborn if the mother is exposed to this drug while she is pregnant. Children and women should never handle Proscar tablets.
