Description of Sabril

Sabril is an anti-epileptic medicine, with Vigabatrin as its active ingredient. You can buy Sabril in the form of oral tablets.

Indications & Dosage of Sabril

Sabril is used for treating complex partial seizures in patients who are at least 16 years of age. It is usually given only to patients who have unsuccessfully tried other anti-epileptic medicines. The drug works by stopping the breakdown of GABA, a natural calming substance, in the patient’s brain. It can be given to the patient along with other anti-epileptic drugs.

Your doctor will ask you to take one Sabril 500mg tablet twice a day. Depending on your response to the treatment, the dosage can be increased by 500mg every week. The maximum dosage a patient can receive is Sabril 3g per day.

You can take the tablets with or without meals.

Side Effects & Interactions of Sabril

Patients using Sabril may commonly experience following side effects of the drug:

  • Irritability, headache
  • Dizziness, tiredness, drowsiness
  • Memory problems
  • Increased weight, swelling of any part of the body
  • Burning pain, numbness or tingling in the feet or hands
  • Joint pain
  • Loss of coordination
  • Nausea, diarrhea, vomiting
  • Insomnia
  • Cold symptoms, including sneezing, throat soreness, fever and stuffy nose

These are mild side effects of Sabril and subside as your body becomes tolerant to the drug. However, inform your doctor immediately if any of these persist or worsen. Also seek medical attention if you develop any of the following serious side effects of the drug:

  • Changes in vision, even if mild
  • Uncontrollable back or forth movements in the eyes
  • Tremors
  • Pale skin, rapid heartbeat, lightheadedness, shortness of breath, difficulty concentrating
  • Worsening seizures
  • Confusion, depression, suicidal thoughts, or mood and behavioral changes

Symptoms of an allergy include swelling or itching of the face, throat, tongue or lips, severe dizziness, hives, or difficulty breathing. Stop taking the medicine at once if you develop any of these symptoms. Seek medical attention if needed.

Some drugs may adversely interact with Sabril. Do not take retinotoxic medicines such as hydroxychloroquine, chloroquine or thioridazine along with Sabril, as serious harm to the eye can occur. Also do not buy Sabril and use it along with phenytoin, as severe drug interactions may take place. As the drug already causes dizziness, you should not take it with other medicines that cause the same effect. These include:

  • Anti-seizure drugs (e.g. carbamazepine)
  • Antihistamines (e.g. diphenhydramine)
  • Narcotic pain relievers (e.g. codeine)
  • Muscle relaxants
  • Antidepressants
  • Psychiatric drugs (e.g. risperidone or trazodone)
  • Medicines for sleep (e.g. diazepam or zolpidem)

Warnings & Precautions of Sabril

Before starting Sabril treatment, inform your doctor if you have a disorder such as psychosis or depression, liver or kidney disease, or an eye problem such as optic nerve problem, macular degeneration, or glaucoma.

Elderly patients may have hampered kidney function, which can affect the proper removal of Sabril from your body. Therefore, such patients should use this drug only if extremely needed, that too with caution.
