Description of Salagen

Salagen belongs to the therapeutic class of cholinergic agonists. Its active ingredient is Pilocarpine, and it is available in the form of oral tablets.

Indications & Dosage of Salagen

Your doctor will recommend you to buy Salagen in order to treat dry mouth symptoms due to Sjogren’s syndrome, or due to salivary gland damage because of radiation treatments in the neck or head for cancer. The medicine stimulates the nerves that increase the production of saliva in your mouth. This makes it easier for you to swallow and speak.

For treating symptoms of neck or head cancer, the initial dose you will have to take is Salagen 5mg thrice a day. The dosage can be increased to Salagen 15 to 30mg per day, depending on your individual requirements and response to treatment.

For the treatment of Sjogren’s syndrome, you may be asked to take one Salagen 5mg tablet four times a day. You can take the tablet with or without meals, with a full glass of water.

Side Effects & Interactions of Salagen

Some of the common side effects associated with Salagen include:

  • Nausea
  • Runny nose
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Increased sweating
  • Changes in vision
  • Chills
  • Redness of the neck and face
  • Increased urination

These are commonly experienced side effects of Salagen and can be easily managed with or without medical help. However, you should contact your doctor if any of these symptoms persist or worsen. Also seek medical attention if you develop any of these symptoms:

  • Trouble breathing
  • Eye pain
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Changes in behavior or mental status or confusion

Some patients may also develop an allergy to the drug. Stop using Salagen immediately if you suffer from hives, difficulty breathing, severe dizziness or swelling or itching of the face, tongue, throat or lips. Seek medical attention at once if needed.

Your doctor will not recommend you to buy Salagen if you are already taking drugs such as beta blockers (e.g. metoprolol or propranolol), antihistamines, belladonna alkaloids, anticholinergics and drugs such as chlorpheniramine, benzatropine, atropine, diphenhydramine, tolterodine or ipratropium. These medicines may worsen mouth dryness, which may make the working of Salagen more difficult.

As the drug causes dizziness, do not take it along with other medicines that cause the same effect. Such drugs include sedatives, narcotic pain relievers, sleeping pills, antidepressants, muscle relaxants, anti-anxiety drugs, anti-seizure medicines, psychotic medicines, and tranquilizers.

Warnings & Precautions of Salagen

Do not use Salagen if you have an allergy to it, or to any other ingredients in the medicine.

Special tests and dosage adjustments may be required before starting Salagen treatment, especially if you have any of the following medical conditions:

  • Glaucoma or any other eye problem
  • Chronic bronchitis, asthma, emphysema or any other lung or breathing problem
  • Heart problem
  • Mental problem
  • Gall bladder problem
  • Stomach problem
  • Blood vessel problem or abnormal blood pressure
