Description of Sanctura

Sanctura has Trospium as its active ingredient, and it belongs to the category of antimuscarinic medicines or antispasmodics. You can buy Sanctura in the form of oral tablets.

Indications & Dosage of Sanctura

Sanctura is used for the treatment of an overactive bladder. It relaxes the muscles of your bladder so that the ability of controlling your urination improves. By doing this, the medicine helps in reducing urinary incontinence, frequency of urination, and urgency to urinate.

Your doctor will recommend you to take Sanctura 20mg twice per day. Take the tablets on an empty stomach, or at least one hour before food. Elderly patients over 75 years of age and patients with severe renal impairment will need to take Sanctura 20mg once a day.

Side Effects & Interactions of Sanctura

Sanctura patients can commonly experience dry mouth, dry throat, dry eyes, constipation, blurred vision, stomach pain, gas, bloating, mild skin rash or drowsiness. These are mild side effects of the drug and can be easily tolerated without any medical help. However, you should notify your doctor if any of these worsen or persist. In order to relieve mouth dryness, you can suck on ice chips or hard candy, chew a sugarless gum, use saliva substitutes or drink water.

Some serious side effects associated with Sanctura include eye pain, fast heartbeat and difficulty urinating. Seek medical attention immediately if you develop any of these symptoms.

Symptoms of an allergic reaction include hives, facial swelling, severe dizziness and difficulty breathing. Inform your doctor without fail if you encounter any of these signs, as severe reactions may take place if left unnoticed. Your doctor will advise you to stop using the medicine if you have an allergy to it.

Some drugs should not be taken with Sanctura, as they may adversely interact with it or interfere with its working. Your doctor will not recommend you to buy Sanctura if you are already using any of the following:

  • Other medicines that are also removed by the kidneys (e.g. metformin, varcomycin, tenofovir, procainamide or morphine)
  • Anti-Parkinson’s drugs (e.g. benzatropine or trihexyphenidyl)
  • Potassium capsules or tablets
  • Other antimuscarinic drugs (e.g. dicyclomine or scopolamine)

Also do not take this drug along with other medications that cause dizziness, as Sanctura already makes you dizzy. Taking other drugs that cause dizziness may lead to worsened side effect. Such medicines include sedatives, sleeping pills, antihistamines, anti-seizure medicines, anti-anxiety drugs, muscle relaxants, narcotic pain relievers, antidepressants and tranquilizers.

Warnings & Precautions of Sanctura

Do not take Sanctura if you have an allergy to Trospium, or to any other active or inactive ingredient in the drug. Also do not take it if you have blockage in the digestive system, uncontrolled or untreated narrow angle glaucoma, or if you are not able to urinate.

Special tests and dosage adjustments will be needed if you have a liver or kidney disease, intestinal or stomach disorder like ulcerative colitis, muscle disorder like myasthenia gravis or enlarged prostate. Inform your doctor beforehand if you have any of these medical conditions.
