General Information on Stelara

Stelara is used for the treatment of plaque psoriasis in adult patients. Its generic name is Ustekinumab, which is an immunosuppressant. The medicine works by reducing effects of certain substances in the body that are responsible for causing inflammation.

The medicine is given to the patient in the form of a subcutaneous injection.

Side effects of Stelara

Your doctor will not advise you to buy Stelara if you suffered an allergy to Ustekinumab, or if you have received a BCG vaccine within the last 12 months.

Before receiving Stelara injection, inform your doctor if you are currently having an infection, high blood pressure or weak immunity. Also inform him or her if you are undergoing phototherapy. Patients with history of tuberculosis should also not use this medicine.

As the medicine may deteriorate your immune response, you may be more susceptible of receiving an illness. You should immediately inform your doctor if you develop signs of a new infection during Stelara treatment, including the following:

  1. Chills
  2. Fever
  3. Throat soreness
  4. Swollen glands
  5. Unusual weakness
  6. Throat and mouth ulcers
  7. Rapid heart rate
  8. Shallow and rapid breathing
  9. Swelling, pain, redness or burning while urinating
  10. Blood in urine
  11. Severe pain in stomach
  12. Changes in bowel habits
  13. Cough with green or yellow mucus
  14. Stabbing chest pain
  15. Vision problems
  16. Seizures
  17. Confusion with severe headache

As the drug decreases your ability to fight against infections, you should try to stay away from patients suffering from mumps, measles, chicken pox, flu or rubella.

Mild diarrhea, skin rash, itching, tiredness, headache and stuffy or runny nose may commonly be experienced after receiving Stelara injection. These are common side effects of the drug and can be easily managed with or without medical help. However, you should inform your doctor immediately if any of these symptoms become intolerable.

Dosage of Stelara

Usually, Stelara injection is given once in 12 weeks. But initially, the first two injections are given at a gap of 4 weeks. The dosage given to you depends on the severity of your medical condition and other medical conditions you are suffering from. Your doctor will also consider all the other medicinal products you are using at present.

The injection should not be given into bruised, tender, hardened or red skin, as severe irritation or inflammation may take place.

Interactions

Your doctor will not recommend you to buy Stelara if you are already taking any of the following medicines:

  1. Medicines that weaken your immunity (e.g. steroids and cancer medicines)
  2. Blood thinners (e.g. warfarin)
  3. Anti-seizure medicines (e.g. carbamazepine, valproid acid, divalproex or phenytoin)
  4. Heart rhythm medicines (e.g. procainamide, quinidine or disopyramide)
  5. Drugs such as cyclosporine, digoxin, sirolimus or theophylline.

Apart from these, inform your doctor about all the prescription and non-prescription drugs you are using at present, including health or nutritional supplements or herbal preparations.
