Description of Targretin
Targretin contains Bexarotene as its active ingredient, and it belongs to the class of retinoids or vitamin A derivatives. You can buy Targretin in the form of oral capsules.
Indications & Dosage of Targretin
Targretin is used for treating skin problems due to cutaneous T-cell lymphoma or CTCL. It is a type of cancer that leads to skin lesions on the patient’s body. The drug works by inhibiting the growth of tumor cells. It is given to those patients who have not yet achieved success with other therapies.
Initially, you will be given Targretin 300mg/m2 per day. If toxicity takes place, the dosage can be decreased to Targretin 200mg/m2, then to Targretin 100mg/m2 per day. Sometimes, your doctor may also advise you to temporarily discontinue taking the drug.
Targretin is usually taken only once a day, along with food.
Side Effects & Interactions of Targretin
Some of the common side effects associated with Targretin include:
- Blood lipids, symptoms of which are high cholesterol and triglycerides
- Underactive thyroid
- Blood problems
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Swelling
- Dry skin
- Rash
- Loss of strength, weakness
- Diarrhea

These are mild side effects of the drug and subside on their own within a few days of starting the treatment as your body adjusts to Targretin. Targretin can lead to increased bad fats in your blood, including cholesterol and triglycerides. In that case, your doctor may either advise you to decrease your dosage, or start a cholesterol medicine.
In some cases, this drug can also lead to underactive thyroid or hypothyroidism. Symptoms of such a condition include unusual weight gain, constipation, feeling cold, depleted energy, and slow heartbeat. Your doctor will need to take a blood test and may prescribe a thyroid drug too.
Targretin decreases your body’s ability to fight infections. Inform your doctor at once if you develop signs of a new infection, including persistent throat soreness, chills and fever.
Serious drug interaction may occur if you take Targretin with Gemfibrozil. In addition to this, do not take it with azole antifungals (e,g, itraconazole), macrolide antibiotics (e.g. clarithromycin), rifamycins (e.g. rifabutin), anti-seizure medicines (e.g. phenytoin), vitamins or supplements containing vitamin A or sulfonylureas (e.g. glipizide).
Warnings & Precautions of Targretin
Your doctor will not recommend you to buy Targretin if you have pancreatitis, diabetes mellitus, high triglycerides in the blood, gall bladder disease, or liver disease. Do not consume grapefruit or its juice along with Targretin, as serious interaction may occur. Your doctor may also advise you to limit alcohol intake during treatment with Targretin.
