Description of Tigan

The drug Tigan is used to prevent nausea and vomiting. The generic name of Tigan is trimethobenzamide. The ingredients of the drug affect a part of the brain known as chemoreceptor trigger zone or CTZ. The CTZ is present in the medulla oblongata. Tigan is available in most countries as an over-the-counter drug, with U.S.A. being the only exception since patients require a doctor’s prescription to buy Tigan.

Tigan is available in drugstores in the form of capsules in only one strength- Tigan 300mg.

Indications & Dosage of Tigan

As mentioned above, Tigan is indicated for the treatment and prevention of problems related to nausea and vomiting. These problems generally occur in patients suffering from drug-induced nausea, gastroenteritis and certain other disorders. Tigan may also be indicated for other purposes.

The doctor’s directions should be strictly followed by patients using Tigan. The prescribed dosage amounts should not be altered. Tigan is usually consumed with a glass of water. Patients should note that Tigan is generally used only when needed. It may also be a part of long term treatment. The recommended daily dose of Tigan is three to four times a day.

For patients who have missed a dose of Tigan, it is important that they skip the dose and return to the normal dosage pattern from the next dose onwards. It is advisable not to compensate for the missed dose by overdosing on the drug. Tigan should be stored at room temperature, away from moisture and heat.

Side effects & Interactions of Tigan

Tigan patients may experience a number of side effects during treatment. Some side effects are minor in nature and barely cause any damage to the body. These side effects wear off in a short time. Some of them are:

• Blurred vision and other vision difficulties;
• Dizziness and headaches;
• Drowsiness and fatigue;
• Depression and other behavioral changes

The aforementioned side effects are minor. However, side effects of a more serious nature may surface as well. These side effects require emergency medical help to be sorted out. Some of them are:

• Severe muscle cramps and spasms;
• Unusual bleeding;
• Weakness and numbness;
• Tremors;
• Seizures;
• Allergic reactions like rashes, breathing trouble, hives, swelling, etc.;
• Jaundice

Drug interactions are not well defined in the case of Tigan. However, this does not imply that other substances will not interact with Tigan at all. To be safe, it is recommended that patients seek the advice from their doctors regarding other substances they can take along with Tigan. These substances range from prescription and non-prescription medication to vitamins, minerals and herbal products.

Warnings & Precautions of Tigan

Patients allergic to the ingredients in Tigan should not use the drug. Alcohol usage should be curbed or totally stopped during treatment with Tigan.

Patients suffering from certain medical conditions like heart issues, asthma, kidney and liver disorders, glaucoma, or urinating trouble should consult a doctor before deciding to buy Tigan.

Tigan usage is not known to affect pregnant and breastfeeding women. However, it is advised that women in such conditions consult a doctor first.
