Description of Topamax
Topamax belongs to the class of anti-epilepsy medications. It also functions as an anticonvulsant. The primary ingredient present in this drug is topiramate. Patients are generally advised to buy Topamax if they suffer from seizures or severe migraine headaches. This medicine is available in the form of capsules and tablets in the following strengths :
- Topamax 25mg, 50mg, 100mg, 200mg tablets;
- Topamax 15mg, 25mg sprinkle capsules
Topiramate is believed to work in a number of ways to prevent fits of epilepsy. The mechanism involves:
- Enhancing the action of a neurotransmitter known as GABA. GAMA regulates nerve activity in the brain and has a calming effect on the brain.
- Prevention of excessive sodium build up in the cells and a reduction of excessive nerve activity.
- Blocking of another neurotransmitter, glutamate, which is responsible for stimulatingthe nerve cells.
The exact mechanism of how Topamax prevents migraine attacks is unknown.
The generic name of Topamax is Topiramate.
Indications & Dosage of Topamax
Topamax is prescribed for:
- Migraine in adults;
- Adjunctive therapy (in patients > 2 years old) in Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome, partial onset seizures, and primary tonic-clonic seizures (generalized);
- Monotherapy (in patients over10 years of age)for primary tonic-clonic (generalized) and partial seizures;
Patients who buy Topamax will be prescribed the dosage based on their age, exact nature of the problem and other medical conditions. It is necessary to conform to the dosage prescribed by the doctor.
Topamax tablets are required to be swallowed whole with water. The medicine is available in the form of sprinkle capsules that can be swallowed or mixed with easy to swallow foods.
Topamax should be stored at controlled room temperature in its original air-tight container.
