Description of Zofran Injection

Ondansetron hydrochloride is the generic name of Zofran Injection, and it is administered intravenously. Ondansetron hydrochloride is considered to be a selective blocking agent of the 5-HT3 serotonin receptor. It is available in the form of an off-white powder form and is soluble in water. Each single dose 2 mL vial of Zofran Injection contains ondansetron 2 mg as the hydrochloride dihydrate, sodium citrate dihydrate 0.25 mg, sodium chloride 9 mg, and citric acid monohydrate 0.5 mg. Indications & Dosage of Zofran Injection

Zofran Injection is prescribed for intravenous administration to prevent vomiting and nausea in patients undergoing emetogenic cancer chemotherapy courses. This injection is approved for administration in patients over 6 months of age.

Prior to administration, the vial containing Zofran must be diluted to form an injectable solution. The recommended dose for adults is a single Zofran Injection 32 mg dose or three doses of Zofran Injection 0.15-mg/kg. If a 32 mg dose is being administered, it should be infused for over 15 minutes and should be given to the patient 30 minutes prior to the emetogenic chemotherapy course. The recommended dose for pediatric patients in the age group of 6 months to 18 years is three Zofran Injection 0.15-mg/kg doses. The first dose should be administered 30 minutes prior to the emetogenic chemotherapy course, and subsequent doses should be administered between 4 and 8 hours from the time of the first dose.

Although there is no controlled data available to confirm the reaction of Ondansetron Solution in pregnant women, most doctors believe that it causes fetal damage.
