Description of Zovirax Cream

Zovirax Cream is an antiviral medicine, and its active ingredient is Acyclovir. It is available in the form of a topical cream. This medicine is available in only one strength, that is Zovirax Cream 5%, and you can buy it in 2gm and 5gm tubes.

Indications & Dosage of Zovirax Cream

Your doctor will recommend you to buy Zovirax Cream for treating cold sores of the lips or face caused by the herpes virus, or conditions such as chicken pox, shingles, genital herpes or outbreaks. It works by stopping the replication of the virus. Although Zovirax Cream does not cure the infection, it reduces the severity of the outbreak. Due to this, the sores heal quicker, new sores are prevented from forming, and pain or itching is decreased. After using this drug, the infection also does not spread to other parts of the patient’s body.

Before applying Zovirax Cream, wash the area and your hands properly and let them dry completely. Apply Zovirax Cream 5% on your skin and rub it in until the cream disappears. Do not wrap the area or use a bandage until advised by your doctor. Also do not swim, take a shower, or a bath immediately after applying the medicine.

Complete the course of treatment even if your symptoms wane before the stipulated duration. The infection may come back if you stop using Zovirax Cream before the full course.

Side Effects & Interactions of Zovirax Cream

Stinging or burning, cracked or dry lips, itching, dryness or flakiness of the skin may surface after applying Zovirax Cream. Although these are mild side effects of the drug, you should notify your doctor if any of these worsen or persist.

Some serious side effects associated with Zovirax Cream include:

  • Dizziness or drowsiness
  • Trouble speaking
  • Shakiness or unsteadiness
  • Mental or mood changes such as confusion, agitation or hallucinations
  • Signs of a kidney problem such as unusual side or back pain, decreased or increased urination

Some patients may also develop an allergic reaction to Zovirax Cream, symptoms of which include hives, severe dizziness, difficulty breathing or facial swelling. Discontinue using the medicine immediately if you develop symptoms of an allergy. Seek medical attention if necessary.

Some drugs may interact with Zovirax Cream or may interfere with each other’s functioning. Therefore, inform your doctor beforehand about all the drugs you are using at present, especially topical cream and ointments. Also do not use any cosmetics on the affected area, as severe irritation may occur.

Warnings & Precautions of Zovirax Cream

Your doctor will not recommend you to buy Zovirax Cream if you have an allergy to Acyclovir or valacyclovir, or to any of its ingredients. Also inform your doctor about any other skin condition you are suffering from. Depending on this information, your doctor will be able to decide whether Zovirax Cream is the right drug for you or not.

Pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers should use this medicine with caution, as it is not yet known whether it is safe for such women and their children or not.
