Description of Zofran ODT

Zofran ODT is a 5-HT3 blocker, and its active ingredient is Ondansetron. You can buy Zofran ODT in the form of orally disintegrating tablets. Each tablet of the medicine also contains propylparaben sodium, methylparaben sodium, mannitol, gelatin and aspartame as inactive ingredients. The tablets have a strawberry flavor. Because these tablets are freeze-dried, they rapidly disintegrate when placed on tongue, without the need of water to help swallowing or dissolving.

Indications & Dosage of Zofran ODT

Zofran ODT is used for preventing nausea and vomiting after a surgery or an anti-cancer treatment such as radiation or chemotherapy. It works by blocking actions of certain chemicals in the body that are responsible for causing nausea and vomiting.

For adults, the recommended dosage is Zofran ODT 24mg. Three Zofran ODT 8mg tablets are given to the patient 30 minutes before starting emetogenic chemotherapy.

You can take Zofran ODT with or without food. Place the tablet on your tongue and wait for it to dissolve completely. Keep swallowing the contents as the tablet dissolves. You can also drink a liquid to swallow a dissolved tablet.

Some common side effects associated with Zofran ODT include diarrhea, constipation, headache, tiredness, weakness, fever, drowsiness or dizziness. Also inform your doctor beforehand if you have a liver disease, heart disease, heart rhythm disorder, congestive heart failure, electrolyte imbalance, or a family or a personal history of Long QT syndrome.
