Description of Ddavp

Ddavp is used to treat increased thirst and urination due to a surgery or trauma to the head and central cranial diabetes. It is also used to treat bed wetting. Its generic name is Desmopressin. Ddavp belongs to the class of medicines called Synthetic Antidiuretic Hormones.

Desmopressin is similar to Antidiuretic Hormone (ADH) produced by the pituitary gland in the brain. It acts as a receptor to the kidneys to prevent excessive water from being filtered out of the blood and urine. In diabetes insipidus, the kidneys produce excessive quantities of diluted urine, which causes increased thirst and may lead to dehydration. Desmopressin acts as ADH and reduces the production of urine. Ddavp is available in Ddavp 0.1mg and Ddavp 0.2mg strengths.

The nonmedical ingredients present in Ddavp are: Magnesium Stearate, Lactose Monohydrate, Potato Starch and Povidone.

Indications & Dosage of Ddavp

It is recommended that patients start with a dose of 0.05mg (1/2 of the 0.1 mg tablet) twice a day and adjust the dose thereafter. The optimal dosage range is 0.1 to 0.8 mg divided as a two or three times a day schedule.

Elderly patients generally have decreased renal function which could cause toxic reactions in the body. Thus, their renal function should be monitored before giving them Ddavp.

It is very important to reduce your intake of water and other fluids while you are taking Ddavp, as it could cause sodium loss, which could lead to electrolyte imbalance in your body.
