Description of Dyrenium

Dyrenium has triamterene as its active ingredient, and it belongs to the class of drugs known as potassium sparing diuretics. You can buy Dyrenium in the form of oral capsules, available in 50mg and 100mg strengths. Apart from Triamterene, the capsules also contain gelatin NF, magnesium stearate NF, lactose NF, titanium dioxide USP, silicon dioxide NF and sodium lauryl sulfate NF. Do not use Dyrenium if you have an allergy to any of these ingredients.

Indications & Dosage of Dyrenium

Dyrenium is used for treating fluid retention or edema in patients with cirrhosis of the liver, a kidney condition known as nephritic syndrome, or congestive heart failure. It can also treat edema caused due to too much aldosterone content in your body. It is a hormone that the adrenal glands produce for regulating water and salt in the body. Dyrenium works by preventing the absorption of too much salt in your body and keeping potassium levels from going too low. It also increases the amount of urine you pass, so that your body can get rid of extra sodium and water. When used with other medicines, Dyrenium can also be used for treating high blood pressure, thereby preventing kidney damage, heart attacks or strokes.

Initially, you will be advised to take Dyrenium 100mg two times a day. If you are using the medicine with other diuretics or antihypertensive agents, the treatment will start with a low dose. After that, the dosage can be adjusted as per your individual needs and response to the treatment. The maximum dosage that you can receive in a day is Dyrenium 300mg. Take the capsules after food, with a full glass of water.

Side Effects & Interactions of Dyrenium

Mild nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, skin rash, vomiting, headache, or dry mouth can commonly occur in Dyrenium patients, especially during the initial phase of treatment. However, they are supposed to improve on their own as your body begins to get used to the presence of this drug. Inform your doctor at once if any of these persist or worsen. Also seek medical attention if you develop any of the following serious side effects of the drug:

  • Tingly feeling or numbness
  • Muscle weakness or pain
  • Slow, uneven or fast heartbeat
  • Drowsiness, lightheadedness or restlessness
  • Decreased or stopped urination
  • Shallow breathing
  • Confusion, tremors
  • Nausea, low fever, stomach pain, dark urine, loss of appetite, clay-colored stools, yellowing of the eyes or skin, jaundice

Do not buy Dyrenium along with ACE inhibitors (e.g. benazepril, enalapril or captopril), NSAIDs (e.g. naproxen, aspirin or diclofenac), insulin or oral diabetic drugs or lithium. Apart from these, inform your doctor about all the medicines you are taking at present, so that he or she can decide whether this is the right drug for you or not.

Warnings & Precautions of Dyrenium

Dyrenium is not meant to be used by patients with kidney disease, severe liver disease, inability to urinate or high potassium levels. Use it with caution if you have a heart or liver disease, diabetes, gout or a history of kidney stones.

Pregnant women should not use Dyrenium, as it may harm the unborn child. It may also pass into breast milk and harm the nursing infant. Therefore, do not use it if you are breastfeeding a child.
