Description of Isoptin

Isoptin has Verapamil as its active ingredient, and it belongs to the category of drugs known as calcium channel blockers. The medicine is available in the form of oral sustained release tablets. You can buy Isoptin in 120mg (light violet), 180mg (light pink) and 240mg (light green) strengths. Although these are sustained release tablets, their characteristics remain unaltered if you divide them into half. Apart from Verapamil, Isoptin tablets also contain titanium dioxide, magnesium stearate, hypromellose, alginate, polyethylene glycol, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, microcrystalline cellulose and talc.

Indications & Dosage of Isoptin

Isoptin is used for treating hypertension, angina and heart rhythm disorders. This helps in lowering your risks of suffering a stroke, heart attack or kidney damage. Isoptin works by relaxing your blood vessels and heart muscles so that your heart rate is reduced and you feel more comfortable and your ability to exercise increases. Isoptin can also be used for controlling heart rate in patients with atrial fibrillation or fast or irregular heartbeat.

The treatment starts with Isoptin 180mg once in the morning. Isoptin 120mg is given to patients who have increased risks of developing side effects of the drug, including elderly patients. After a week, the dosage can be increased depending on how your body responds to the drug.

You will be advised to take Isoptin tablets with food.
