Description of Luvox CR

Luvox CR is a prescription drug used for treating depression and anxiety. The generic name of Luvox CR is fluvoxamine maleate. It belongs to a category of antidepressants known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

The abbreviation “CR” in Luvox CR stands for "controlled release"

Luvox CR is meant for oral administration. You can buy Luvox CR in the form of oral capsules .The capsules should be swallowed whole. Tablets come in strengths of Luvox CR 25 mg, Luvox CR 50 mg and Luvox CR 100 mg.

Indications & Dosage of Luvox CR

Although Luvox CR was primarily developed to be used for treating depression, it is now also prescribed for treating obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and social anxiety disorder (SAD) .

Fluvoxamine, the main ingredient in Luvox CR, prevents the reabsorption of a chemical called serotonin in the nerve cells. When serotonin is released from nerve cells in the brain, it effectively elevates our mood. When it is reabsorbed back into the nerve cells, it is rendered ineffective. Luvox CR helps prolong the mood elevating effect of any released serotonin in the brain.

For treating obsessive compulsive disorder, a starting dose of 100 mg at bedtime is advised, with a weekly increase of 50 mg in the dose, not to exceed 300 mg per day. Capsules should not be chewed or crushed.
