Description of Mepron

Mepron belongs to the therapeutic category of antiprotozoal agents. Its generic name is Atovaquone, and it is given to the patient in the form of an oral suspension.

Indications & Dosage of Mepron

Mepron is used for the treatment and prevention of pneumonia caused due to a fungal infection known as Pneumocystitis carinii or Pneumocystis jiroveci. The drug works by interfering with the protozoal reproduction which is responsible for causing the disease in the patient’s body.

For prevention of PCP in adults and adolescents, the recommended dosage is Mepron 1500mg per day taken with meals. For treatment of moderate PCP in adults and adolescents, the recommended dosage is Mepron 750mg twice a day, taken for a period of 21 days.

You must take Mepron for the full period of prescription even if your symptoms wane much before that, as the infection may not have been treated completely. If you stop taking the drug before the full period of prescription, the infection may resurface.

Before you buy Mepron, inform your doctor about any medicines you are taking at present, especially rifamycins such as rifampin or rifabutin, or drugs such as carbamazepine or clozapine. Apart from these, inform your doctor about all the prescription and non-prescription drugs you are using presently, including herbal preparations and diet supplements.

As Mepron causes dizziness, do not take it with any other drugs that cause the same effect. Such medicines include sleeping pills, sedatives, narcotic pain relievers, antidepressants, anti-seizure drugs, anti-anxiety medicines or tranquilizers.

Warnings & Precautions of Mepron

Before you buy Mepron, inform your doctor about your medical history. Tell him/her if you have a liver disease, stomach disorder (e.g. malabsorption syndrome or long-term diarrhea) or lung problem.

In addition to that, limit alcohol intake during Mepron treatment, as it may worsen the symptom of dizziness and lead to a serious accident.
