Description of Requip

Requip is a dopamine receptor, and its active ingredient is Ropinirole. You can buy Requip in the form of oral tablets.

Indications & Dosage of Requip

Requip is indicated for relieving symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. It can not only improve the patient’s ability to move and decrease stiffness, shakiness, slowed movements and unsteadiness, but can also reduce the frequency of episodes. In some cases, this medicine can also be used for treating RLS or restless legs syndrome. The medication works by restoring balance of dopamine in your brain, the lack of which is responsible for causing Parkinson’s disease.

For treating Parkinson’s disease, the treatment will start with Requip 0.25mg thrice a day. After 4 weeks, the dosage can be increased by Requip 1.5mg per day per week. For the treatment of RLS, the starting dose is Requip 0.25mg once a day, to be taken 1-3 hours before sleeping. After 2 days, it can be increased to Requip 0.5mg per day.

Side Effects & Interactions of Requip

Common side effects associated with Requip include:

  • Mild nausea, loss of appetite, stomach pain or vomiting
  • Worsened symptoms of RLS in the morning
  • Dry mouth or sweating
  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Drowsiness or dizziness
  • Sleep problems or insomnia
  • Anxiety or agitation

These symptoms are supposed to subside on their own over time. However, if any of these continue or turn severe, it would be better to call your doctor at once. Also seek immediate medical help if you have any serious side effects of Requip. These include:

  • Fever, muscle stiffness, confusion, uneven or fast heartbeat, sweating
  • Hallucinations
  • Chest tightness, difficulty breathing
  • Tremors or uncontrolled shaking

Before you buy Requip, inform your doctor if you are taking any antipsychotics (such as haloperidol or chlorpromazine), quinolone antibiotics (such as norfloxacin or ciprofloxacin), estrogens, drugs that affect liver enzymes (such as cimetidine or omeprazole), or any drugs for treating Parkinson’s disease (such as carbidopa, levodopa or I-dopa.

As Requip causes dizziness, do not take it along with any other drugs that cause the same effect, including sleeping pills (such as alprazolam or zolpidem), narcotic pain relievers (such as codeine), anti-seizure drugs (such as carbamazepine), antihistamines (such as diphenhydramine) or psychiatric medicines (such as trazodone or amitriptyline)

Warnings & Precautions of Requip

Before taking Requip, inform your doctor if you have any of the following medical conditions:

  • Heart problems (e.g. irregular heartbeat)
  • Mental or mood disorder (e.g. confusion, psychoses, hallucinations or schizophrenia)
  • Sleep disorder (e.g. narcolepsy or sleep apnea
  • Liver or kidney disease
