Description of Exforge
The generic name for Exforge is amlodipine and valsartan. Amlodipine acts as a calcium channel blocker and it helps in relaxing the heart muscles as well as the muscles of blood vessels. Valsartan acts as an angiotensin II receptor and it helps in preventing the bloods vessels from becoming narrow and thus contributes towards lowering blood pressure and improving blood flow. The inactive ingredients in Exforge include magnesium stearate, crospovidone, colloidal silicon dioxide, and microcrystalline cellulose. Indications & Dosage of Exforge
Exforge is prescribed by doctors for treatment of high blood pressure or hypertension. Exforge is normally prescribed only if other medications have failed to reduce hypertension. It is also recommended for those patients whose blood pressure cannot be adequately controlled and can even be used as a combination medication to treat stage 2 hypertension patients.
The recommended dose includes Amlodipine 2.5 mg to 10 mg once daily along with Valsartan 80 mg to 320 mg depending on the requirements of the patients. The minimum dose period should be 2 weeks and the minimum dose should be Exforge 5/160 mg per day. After 2 weeks, if required, doctors can increase the dose to Exforge 10/160 mg or 5/320 mg per day for another 2 weeks. Elderly patients should not be administered more than 2.5mg of Amlodipine and 80mg of Valsartan. Exforge should be taken with a glass of water and with or without food.

Combination of Amlodipine and Valsartan in Exforge is known to cause birth defects and hence is not recommended to pregnant women for oral intake.
